“ Here is my issue with toei. They mucked up the release of sailor stars and here they go again mucking up the release of cosmos. They had an opportunity to get it out to millions of fans in the states. What they did was hold out on it so much for more money with Netflix that it delayed all the resleases. Instead of settling on medium to high profit, toei tried to ask Netflix for 3x what they paid for eternal. Not double, 3x. I found this out internally through some high up friends in the LA office. Netflix refused and only after so much time had passed Netflix passed on the deal. No one was ok with the price toei wanted. It wasn’t to pay the actors more or even market the movie more, it was to pad their pockets. So here we go Millions are now finding torrents and streams of cosmos and again completely mucking up the profits they could have had. What a joke toei. If you had just agreed for incremental increases or releasing on Blu-ray dates you wouldn’t be missing out on millions right now. Millions lost.”

How much legit is that… cannot say… actor strikes in US was probably also a good reason for the movies still not being out (as Netflix always or mostly release stuffs internationally at the same date)

Not legit at all.
The SAG-AFTRA strike didn't apply to dubbing of foreign productions. And even if it did, it was just English-speaking countries which would have to wait just a little more to have their dubbed audio option.

I've been hearing so many conflicting stories about Cosmos' international rights, so I'm taking everything with a grain of salt.

One thing is obvious - it's taking longer than usual for Cosmos to reach international fans.
Indeed. Some said December 31, others said, announcements coming soon, and ultimately, there was nothing... Better to wait and that's it.

We know now that was not worth it to wait to release first the blu rays in Japan. It only sold 1000 copies more than eternal. We also know that just in the first half of 2023 eternal got more than 2.6 million streams on Netflix. Can you imagine how many millions could get if it was released before everyone watch it using alternative methods? I guess sailor moon is much more profitable for Toei internationally than Japan but their respect for us is disgusting.

Strangeness defines each and every aspect of TOEI Animation.

They delivered the first arcs as cheaply made ONAs… and the last two arcs as films; and, from what I hear, Cosmos looks gorgeous.

I wouldn’t expect consistency from them.

I don't know if those statements are true or not. Anything we say regarding this matter will be mere speculation on our part.

Let's use a bit of critical thinking:

Toei Animation knows perfectly well they can make more money with Sailor Moon outside of Japanese borders. They know the strategy employed with Eternal was ideal. If Toei has missed the opportunity to distribute the Cosmos movies abroad, also knowing that the films would end up being pirated and fans would watch them illegally, it's likely due to financial considerations or contractual agreements that have not yet been reached with international distributors. At least, that's the most reasonable conjecture given everything that has happened, because any company, no matter how big, small, or miserly stupid, wouldn't pass up such a good business opportunity.

I have the impression that anyway only the hardcore fans pirated the movies and most of them will probably also support the official release, whether by buying the jap bluray or streaming on netflix.
On the contrary, for me, a hardcore fan should buy the Blu-ray box set, not pirate it. Afterwards, if it is a question that the country cannot import, yes. But if it's a question of money, save before the release and buy afterwards.

Hmm english is the most watch language on Netflix (and from far away) so I’m pretty convinced that Netflix would wait till the English dubbing is ready to release the movies at same date internationally (and not just add this language later)…. But yeah who knows anyway.
As you mentioned, I really don’t know also the SAR-AFTRA rules… it seems anyway that the US actors started recently to dub the movies, so it should be ready for sure in few weeks (if not days…). I just hope they’re not now gonna use a hommage date to do it like USAGI birthday….

Exactly! I bought the BluRay Boxed Set. I understand pirating if you can't import it but saying only hardcore fans pirate is insane. Hardcore support their franchise not steal from it.

Let’s be honest at this stadium anyway, Cosmos on Netflix or not will not attract any new fans… I like Netflix platform because it’s funny to be able to watch the movies easily with different audio tracks.

and absolutely true too only hardcore fan knows and are actually interested by seeing the movies through other ways (others probably doesn’t even know that there are two new movies out lol).
