Sailor Moon DiC 4k Upscaled

So I love the DiC version and honestly would have liked it if they had it on streaming and remastered it but that is of course never going to happen.

It's a little project I've been working on with newer upscaling algorythm making it possible.

Of course because the original version is SD, there is lost of detail on certain things but overall I think it's really great.

Used ThomasFan1945 Productions rips to upscale to 4k
resolution 2880x2160 @ 30fps

Usually I turn off my computer at night for bed but it's on all day long.
My Other system is always online as well.

I think it looks really good! I hope you're able to do the entire series. I'm desperate for anyone to upscale/remaster the DiC dub. I know there are other remastering projects going on, but I don't know what their statuses are.

I don't understand why the original version is more stretched than the upscaled one since both are 4:3

It's not supposed to be unless your media player can't handle Pixel Aspect ratios
but looks like on the right someone cropped the 720x480 image to make it a 1:1 PAR instead of squishing it back down to 640x480.

I think it looks really good! I hope you're able to do the entire series. I'm desperate for anyone to upscale/remaster the DiC dub. I know there are other remastering projects going on, but I don't know what their statuses are.

Thanks, all 82 of the DiC episodes have been upscaled to 1440x1080, they are also currently about 2gb per file..so I'm going to have to reencode them down to a more manageable 300-400mb H.265 MKV files.

Edit: the reencoding takes really fast, about 2 minute per files so it would be finished super quick.

I am not sure how this site feels about sharing via torrents because I don't know how else to share the files.

Currently I have finished the recolour templates and just need to apply them. It's a little bit more vibrance, blacks are more black and a tad bit sharper.

Left is Upscaled untouched. Right is upscaled with colour enchancements.

This looks stunning! Most upscales and recolorings end up giving Sailor Moon a bright lemon hair color, but she looks perfect.

I can't wait for the links. I've been wanting to replace my old DVD rips for a while now.

I have to wonder about the framerate you're encoding them at, while the Japanese original is 24 frames per second through and through, I have noticed through editing to grab frames that the DiC original graphical elements are a full 30 frames per second, if the video does get encoded at 24, there may be missing frames as far as certain graphics are concerned.

Thanks! I've kinda decided just to upscale it to 4k since it looks better and then I wouldn't have to later on.

They are 30fps, I used ThomasFan1945 Productions rips.

Anyway I'm running into a few problems,

1. she's VERY pink during her transformation and of her regular power move scenes are darker in some episodes then others

Left is orginal upscaled 4k, Right is colour corrected 4k

2. certain colours in certain scenes are WAY off because old style animation so I may not correct those. too much time.

3. Can't find a place to upload the torrent link soo there's a bummer. Nyaa no longer accepts new registration and AniDex...don't know what's going on.

unforunately I can't upload it to any of the torrent sites cause it requires registration that are closed or don't work.

I haven't recoloured anyt of the episodes. it is untouched.

My connection is a 1gb fiber upload but my isp hates torrents so be patient.

:/ predictive algorithms can only go so ofar when the original is made for CTR with 320p resolution, shoved into a 480p interlaced dvd

You know, seeing the videos blocked by Viz got me thinking...is Viz literally trying to make it so nobody would know the DIC Dub's existence on purpose? Because that's the way the videos that kept getting copyrighted look to me, it seems. And it sucks as I wanted to see what the remastering looks like on YT.

Yep to all of this! thank you @PowPowCho ...I love the DiC version, but the original blurry quality can be a drag.

The DiC version will always h.ave a strong impact on me. The names, the music, the sound editing, voice acting...all great. If only Viz put in as much effort into their dub.

Is anyone still seeding the torrent? Or could anyone upload the episodes somewhere like Mega or Dropbox or Google Drive? I had downloaded the torrent when @PowPowCho originally posted it, but a lot of the episodes (especially the R ones) seem to be corrupted (at least, they're not playing correctly for me). I've tried to re-torrent them, but it's been stuck at 0.0%.

So how does upscaling actually work these days?

I'm always blown away by the difference in sharpness...and it kinda boggles my mind that data can be improved THIS much when the previous data was poorer quality...like..........HOW??? WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT LOL

Is there a special program that can just do this? Like you just open it, import the episode and hit "Upscale"?? (yeah right haha) Or is it way more complicated than that? And does it take hours of work? Is it tedious and tricky?

(I should really just watch a youtube video on it lol)
