This is true. But I have my pet peeves about something that is not yours and change it. Even if you might improve on certain aspects, very few in Dic's case, but you haven't created this product - it is not your to change. Anyway these were the times, but I am against it as practice - if you find this thing that problematic, create something better from scratch.
Such practice of changing imported Japanese anime has been there in the West for decades since the 70s, if not earlier, & the Japanese anime production houses supposedly have been well aware of that for a long time. lol

I know and no matter how normal it is from legal point if view, it still feels wrong in my eyes. So I could never compare it in the benefit of the West in this case.

This is one area the old DIC dub actually improved in. They changed the message of this episode from problematic fat-shaming concerning unrealistic beauty standards for women into more having to do the importance of healthy eating habits for health rather than just to look beautiful.
And let's not forget that in the original, Usagi is cheered up because Motoki tells her that he likes chubby girls. So girls should only feel proud of their bodies when a boy tells them he likes it, because girls' self-esteem still relies on the male gaze. Nice. Meanwhile, in the DiC dub, he tells her to exercise and eat more because starving yourself is unhealthy and will make you look frail. Also, in the original version Luna encourages Sailor Moon to fight because doing so will make her skinny, fit, and beautiful. In the DiC dub, Luna tells her that fighting the Negaverse is more important than her figure.

Ironically enough(nah, not really), the DiC dub still made some unsatisfactory changes, such as removing the girls' down-with-sexual-discrimination speech and replacing it with needless yabber about fighting the Negaverse, and shortening their transformation phrases to leave out the "Make-Up!" part, taking away the notion that femininity is power(by showing make-up as a battle cry, not something that is worn only to attract boys or to change themselves. They were probably worrying about the effect such a poisonous word such as "makeup" would have on young girls who are just soooo naive and eager to sexualize themselves, pathetically missing the point of the message.). But oh well. For all its achievements and nostalgia for some, DiC is still...well, DiC.

Would you have preferred it if they just removed the episode altogether if they found it problematic?

Well they did it with other episodes, this one is a pure filler and it is not just the episode, it is the whole practice. But like I said these were the times, still some changes were so uncalled for like the whole ''Raye'' character switch. I enjoy watching the old dub I do not take it seriously. Anyway.

Another big pet peeve regarding the old show. Why didn't they ask Kotono Mitsuishi to go and redo the episodes she missed for upcoming re-releases? I mean she is still very much involved with the project. Like for the dvd release or the so called "blu ray" they could have asked her to record the lines for these episodes. Kae Araki did a very good job, but I want to see Kotono's take, especially in episode 45

People who try to interject politics and religion in the show.
Sailor Moon is a series about a single person imposing her authoritarian rule over a few billions of other humans, crushing all dissent without any mercy, and refusing to leave even a square foot of soil on the planet not under her control. I think politics was deeply ingrained into the series from the very beginning, not just arbitrarily injected by fans.

Sailor Chaos and Chibiusa make her understand that what she is doing is wrong.

My pet peeves in Sailor Moon are what TOEI did to Takeuchi and the fanbase during the production of Stars until the time Takeuchi withdrew the overseas rights to the anime, they did not even let the English speaking fans watch Stars without getting it exported or in illegal means and the fact that CCS took over the popularity of Sailor Moon in Asia.

I agree.

The worst(best?) part is that it’s hard for me to tell if you’re talking about Neo-Queen Serenity or Sailor Galaxia.

Huh. I didn’t know that happened. The more you know.

My question however is how Naoko Takeuchi can withdraw the right to her own creation.

Neither! He means Naoko! :P

Has this ever been done before for other anime series? I could see this idea as having been plausible in the past, but these days Kotono's voice strains so much to deliver her Usagi I think it'd be really jarring to jump back and forth between her old Usagi voice and new Usagi voice.

How?! If anything, it seems like much of her control and rights to the work were stripped from her much of the time, like with the whole Sailor Starlights shebang, and what someone else said about Stars above.

All those changes are actually pretty consistent - they're just trying to avoid controversies/troubles from whichever sides, hence ensuring the series to be aired uninterrupted & thus their revenue unharmed. :)

I cannot think of an anime in which the main character had to be temporary replaced for a reason, there might be, I just never heard of a similar situation. I agree, now it won't be the best time to do it, after all her voice aged and all, but they could had done it for the dvd release...

I guess empowering girls and showing being girly as powerful was gonna be controversial and take a backseat to not triggering whoever wasn’t the target audience in the friggin’ 90s. Can’t get your hopes up too high for DiC. ;(

Yeah, having a big size or being plump is one thing (I actually like that), but obesity is a (both personal & public) health issue.
I think the problem is people don't know how to do medium.Luke yes treating people badly because their fat is wrong. But pretdnding is their is no problem being over weight is bad as well.

That's true. I think another problem comes from people assuming that EVERY fat person must be overweight and unhealthy. Maybe showing healthy fat people in media who don't only eat fast food might be a good place to start?

You can be a healthy fat person in your 20s or 30s but later on it surely causes problems. There is a healthy norm we should promote. Too skinny/obese is for sure causing problems down the road. The problem is some people still call a complete healthy average full figure ''fat''... Both too skinny and too fat people eventually develop health problems so neither of these should be promoted. There is a spectrum of healthy we can focus on that.
