I was rewatching the first two season in bluray, back in the day I used to watch it on my 15inch laptop but now I was watching in my 42" 4K TV and the models were not THAT bad as I used to remember. The problem for me was the shading, something more like celshading style (with lineart effect) could have helped + the transformation scene fps were not even constant, like mars for example, it goes like 24fps but in the fire effects looks like it was rendered at 14fps or something lmao

They had consistency issues in general, too. Mercury's symbol took so long to become a tiara in comparison to the others... Strange for the senshi of the planet of the fleetfooted god, lol.

My biggest issue with them was that they were a little immersion breaking from the switch from 2D to 3D. It's kind of a shame, because with a little more fine touches and care, they could have show ln the transformations from alternate angles in each episode they were used in pretty easily (just more rendering). Could've been neat.

I know im really in minority here but for me the transformations in season 1 and 2 are still 1000 better than the one in season 3 ^_^'

the inners one are so “empty” so boring. I do like the 2 from Moon and Chibimoon though. And for the Outers, well copy paste for me is also a no go.

I am not a big fan of the transformations in Crystal in general. But then again they are the least important thing for me, so I'm fine with whatever about them.

Hahah for me the henshin and attack sequences are the base of sailor moon
Everyone has his own aspects I guess
True, I mean in the filler 90s episodes when I was a kid I enjoyed them the most, but for an adaptation of the manga best would have been instant transformation and well done real live attacks. With the story moving so fast the transformations are a real show stopper at times and it was really annoying seeing Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon's attack stock footage twice in act 39.

Agreed. While they do look strange with a combination of different styles the flow and creativity is way more eye-catching in S1 & 2. Compare Season 1 & Season 3 of Jupiter transformation and you'll notice the clunkiness of S3. Not sure if I am describing it right but I noticed in S1 & 2 the transformations were flid and smooth like the 90's but in Season 3, it was more erratic.

I think all three season have their strengths and weakness but it looks like eternal may have fixed everything some, especially with Mercury's transformation.

In Eternal it’s unbalanced too, though. You have Mercury who looks great! Then you have Jupiter whose henshin and attack are both very underwhelming. It would be nice to have some consistency. I’m not saying the 90’s anime was perfect or anything but it felt like all the Senshi were given the same amount of time and care in the attack and transformation department.

It's funny to me how they added things like during Mars' first transformation, the flames that go out of her wand cover her legs all the way, instead of just her feet for her heels, as if they expected to use that exact same sequence until Crystal got to adapt Stars, so they could just use that same animation to show her boots appearing. I still love the music, though.

what I do regret in Eternal is the copy paste of choreographies for attacks and transformations from the classic anime. I hate when they do that… I mean you can be inspired by them (like for Moon Spiral heart attack) but do the exact same thing is really a bit  for me. I was so disappointed in season 3 with the outers henshin sequences. Or with Moon Crisis Make up) because it’s my least favorite transformation already in the classic anime.

True to the exception of the Outers (Saturn in front) in the last season… it’s still for me unexplained why the outers never got a simple update of the if henshin sequences when the Starlight got 2 henshin sequences…(Well the first version was horrible to be honest lol)

Maybe it's not unbalanced, well then again, maybe it is unbalanced, but it also seems like they play favorites for the Senshi sometimes, like Mercury is pretty popular, and so is Uranus, so they get "extra care" with their scenes. Mars does sometimes too. It could also be that these days, there are more freelance animators working on scenes so they are stretched thin and can't be consistent. The 90's pretty much copied the same transformation each season for the Inners, while Crystal henshins are not exactly the same. Mercury has always gotten better treatment out of the Inners when it came to transformations tho even if hers is the shortest. I think a lot of shows do that though. Add a extra flair to popular or fav characters but for Eternal they didn't even bother to add any new choreography to Jupiter's transformation from what I saw which probably means it was meant to be like that from the get go.

Jupiter Oak Evolution never was that spectacular in any version tbh but I am certain it would have been quite nice to see in the first Crystal style since Flower Hurricane looked nice. The only thing I dont like about her "new" transformation is when she spins down, it looks jumpy. I noticed in the 90's (and the first two season of Crystal to an extent) version when she spirals down, there is the brief shots under her skirt and a close up of her chest, but Season 3 speeds through this part and it makes her transformation look "jumpy" or rushed or something (too suggestive??). Same for Venus, when she spirals down, it just doesn't look smooth like in 90's and Crystal 1 and 2.

Jupiter Coconut Cyclone is probably her best looking attack. Oak Evolution looks basic in Eternal but it kinda always looked basic but I believe Eternal balanced this out by giving her more runtime in the movie compared to others, so I think Eternal balanced out things in other ways and not just transformations and attacks maybe.

those flames kinda looks like birds (phobos and deimos) to me  it looks so cool

why couldnt just follow the old story boards for the transformations?

So much wasted potential... they could have used the same choreographies updated with new angles and effects. Oak Evolution should have at least given the oak leaf crown a moment to shine. But they didn‘t even show it/ cut it in the middle. I guess we won‘t see the crown ever again. Same with Mercury‘s harp. C‘mon, a close up of her playing it would have been nice! I don‘t know if this was Kon‘s decision... it was definitely a bad one.

By the way do the re-use the inner’s attacks in the 2nd movie ? I think they use them again in the manga ? I suppose it’s the same stock footage and no real time attack or some variation unfortunately.

I really hope it is real time but I can't remember what someone said on here. It turn into a sort of throw the power face off or something. I really wish Nehellania's Mirror Paredri were a thing because I would have loved to see her call in some kind of army and the Inner and Outer senshi demolish them with various attacks in a different way, similar to the Inners destroying the Kisenain Blossoms in the R movie, and then after that Sailor Moon does her Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss and banishes Nehellania in fine detail.

I agree with your comment about the freelance animators maybe giving their favs more care than others. If I’m not mistaken Shingo Fuuji who is really talented worked on Mercury’s henshin and attack and seems to be a big Mercury stan so it kind of makes sense. However in the other hand Chiaki Kon must’ve storyboarded the henshins and attacks for the movie as a base for the animators to follow and yet didn’t give Jupiter anything? I don’t wanna dwell on things that can’t be changed anymore but it is very puzzling.

Anyway as for the Eternal style award and who overall got the best treatment for me it goes..

Mercury> Saturn> Chibi Moon> Uranus> Mars> Moon> Pluto> Venus> Neptune> Jupiter

I wonder how much of Jupiter's attacks/transformation treatment in Eternal was due to time constraints and COVID. I wish they'd polished it just a bit like they did with Neptune's Deep Submerge as seen in the new trailer... It really wouldn't have taken much to at least add a few shadow outlines onto her outfit and body to give it slightly more oomph. Can't really help the crown being cut off, though.

The odd thing to me is that Mercury was the classic popular senshi back when the manga and anime were active, but recent polls in Japan have shown that she's slipped in comparison to the others. Seems she's still the golden child of the animators themselves, though.

It would have been better if Jupiter had this fight outside or something then we could see how powerful it could be done. For some reason I feel like her being in the apartment was setback to her unleashing some real power. Well, it's kinda not a good excuse but meh. Jupiter apparently had the bulk of runtime in the first film...so idk about time constraints. I'll probably never know. We'll just have to deal with it either way. I will admit that her spin isn't as fluid as it is in the 90's during Oak Evolution.

She rocks in 90s and Crystal season 3. I'm happy these exist.

For the last season of Eternal I'm gonna lower my expectations again as clearly there's no artistic freedom unlike seasons 1-3. :booze:
