Jonas brothers used to be extremely popular. Even though they were a pre-teens group they had great sales and everyone still knows their name. The two Japanese artist you listed were never and never will be relavent or popular. I'm not sticking up for the Jonas Brothers but you can't compare two super low selling obscure Japanese artist to very well selling and known American artist. Maybe you could try and re-think your comparisons.
Kpop is just a tad bit better in my opinion. Jpop has a little of like a funky type 90's pop and Kpop sounds like pop here, but it's a hundred times better cause it doesn't sound like they took five minutes to make the song like the bullshit they do here 
. And plus most of their songs have meaning not just words. J pop has a alot people in their groups too. GG has 9 but i'd rather learn nine girls names and faces then 42 !

I actually liked SDN48... really sad to hear that they were disbanding. Anyway I kinda skimmed through the thread and correct me if I'm wrong but I do agree that the whole 48 franchise is probably ruining Jpop. They're dominating and leaving no room for competition and it's making rookie Jpop groups suffer a bit. I mean, I love some AKB48 girls but, you know...
I think the 48 era is at the beginning of their end though. Maeda Atsuko just announced her graduation a few days ago and she's the face of AKB48. She is AKB48. It's gonna be a steady downfall after that especially when the other popular members graduate as well. It happened with Morning Musume and it's gonna happen with AKB48 too... Any new girls that join the group(s) just won't become as popular as the original members were.
I disagree about Kpop being better. If you stay in the Kpop fandom for about a year or more and follow a ton of Kpop groups you will really start to notice how poor the quality of music is in general. Especially most rookie groups.
The music is very formulaic and the kids in these groups usually aren't that talented. It's because a lot of Korean companies are taking advantage of this 'Kpop boom' and popping out groups like crazy with awful songs that are usually the cliche teenage love confession types.
Boy groups especially are no different than Justin Bieber here in the states. These groups are targeted to teenagers in S. Korea like JB is targeted to teenagers in the west.
Granted, there are groups that have quality music and performers but they're only a handful compared to the all the bad groups that are littering Kpop.
Oh and for me personally, I have no problem remembering the faces and names of a ton of girls. I'm a fan of tons of Kpop girl groups to some extent so I know well over 100 different faces and names.

oh yea there are fans that know all the AKB48 girls and I wont be surprised if fans that will get the see some of them in DC this year at the festival go crazy for them just like when they were at anime fest in NYC years ago.In my view jpop is somewhat slowly dying down since even if there are sub groups and what not alot of them get overshadowed by AKB48 alone.They made one group for just the Dragon Ball Kai ending and one for the Kamen Rider W series even though 2 of their members were in the series and movies.I see more of the K-pop music being more popular than ever before.Alot of fans go nuts over them and one indication is Girls Generation alone.When they did their tour in NYC months back fans were waiting in line for days to get to see them and when they did their album promotion of The Boys the whole Best Buy in union square was like cut off from 2am in the morning till when the girls left the area since so many fans wanted to see them.Alot of k-pop groups I also have noticed they go and do a album in japan then go back and do other stuff.But sometimes they do die down and either the members do their own thing or something else.But there are too many boy groups in K-pop and most of them look almost the same
