Now that's the idol Minako.

Considering that clip I posted above & this pic, maybe she's even a closet Sailor Moon fan. :P
Well, she is a fan of Dragon Ball, so I don't see that assumption being too far from the mark.

The only J-Pop artists that I know are Daisy x Daisy and Riyu Kosaka, and both of them are more talented than most of the new age pop singers here in the States.
Neither of them are very relevant or popular at all though.

Ironically neither are the Jonas Brothers here in the States. It seems like 90% of pop stars are merely just flashes in the pan.

Jonas brothers used to be extremely popular. Even though they were a pre-teens group they had great sales and everyone still knows their name. The two Japanese artist you listed were never and never will be relavent or popular. I'm not sticking up for the Jonas Brothers but you can't compare two super low selling obscure Japanese artist to very well selling and known American artist. Maybe you could try and re-think your comparisons.

Nah, that's the best I can do as pop music in any culture is not my forte. Who would be an example of a well known J-pop artist?

Ayumi Hamasaki, AKB48, Amuro Namie, Arashi, Akanishi Jin, and Kana Nishino.

Kpop is just a tad bit better in my opinion. Jpop has a little of like a funky type 90's pop and Kpop sounds like pop here, but it's a hundred times better cause it doesn't sound like they took five minutes to make the song like the bullshit they do here :|. And plus most of their songs have meaning not just words. J pop has a alot people in their groups too. GG has 9 but i'd rather learn nine girls names and faces then 42 :| !

I really hope the immense popularity of K-artists & K-pop on the J-pop scene in the recent years or even decade could stimulate a rejuvenation of J-pop (& by that I don't mean copycatting/bootlegging K-artists/pop like some of the J-artists/groups are currently doing! :| ), instead of the negative, ugly reactions against them shown by right-wing politicians/groups.

J pop has a alot people in their groups too. GG has 9 but i'd rather learn nine girls names and faces then 42 :| !
If you consider all the AKB sister groups together, it's even way much more than 42, notwithstanding the overlapping memberships among those groups, & the number is still kept increasing as more & more new ones are formed like mushrooms. :oh:

It could (sorta) help alleviating the acute youth unemployment/underemployment over there, tho. :P

I actually liked SDN48... really sad to hear that they were disbanding. Anyway I kinda skimmed through the thread and correct me if I'm wrong but I do agree that the whole 48 franchise is probably ruining Jpop. They're dominating and leaving no room for competition and it's making rookie Jpop groups suffer a bit. I mean, I love some AKB48 girls but, you know...

I think the 48 era is at the beginning of their end though. Maeda Atsuko just announced her graduation a few days ago and she's the face of AKB48. She is AKB48. It's gonna be a steady downfall after that especially when the other popular members graduate as well. It happened with Morning Musume and it's gonna happen with AKB48 too... Any new girls that join the group(s) just won't become as popular as the original members were.

I disagree about Kpop being better. If you stay in the Kpop fandom for about a year or more and follow a ton of Kpop groups you will really start to notice how poor the quality of music is in general. Especially most rookie groups.

The music is very formulaic and the kids in these groups usually aren't that talented. It's because a lot of Korean companies are taking advantage of this 'Kpop boom' and popping out groups like crazy with awful songs that are usually the cliche teenage love confession types.

Boy groups especially are no different than Justin Bieber here in the states. These groups are targeted to teenagers in S. Korea like JB is targeted to teenagers in the west.

Granted, there are groups that have quality music and performers but they're only a handful compared to the all the bad groups that are littering Kpop.

Oh and for me personally, I have no problem remembering the faces and names of a ton of girls. I'm a fan of tons of Kpop girl groups to some extent so I know well over 100 different faces and names. ^_^

Yeah, they've collectively graduated this month.

It's all about balanced development - I do think groups like them should always exist but not occupying the centerpiece status in the J-pop scene for a prolonged period of time.

Or rather, they're taking advantage of the J-pop slump. :P

I think there're also some fans who can memorize the faces, full names, & personal profiles of all the XXX48 girls. l o l

oh yea there are fans that know all the AKB48 girls and I wont be surprised if fans that will get the see some of them in DC this year at the festival go crazy for them just like when they were at anime fest in NYC years ago.In my view jpop is somewhat slowly dying down since even if there are sub groups and what not alot of them get overshadowed by AKB48 alone. They made one group for just the Dragon Ball Kai ending and one for the Kamen Rider W series even though 2 of their members were in the series and movies.I see more of the K-pop music being more popular than ever before.Alot of fans go nuts over them and one indication is Girls Generation alone. When they did their tour in NYC months back fans were waiting in line for days to get to see them and when they did their album promotion of The Boys the whole Best Buy in union square was like cut off from 2am in the morning till when the girls left the area since so many fans wanted to see them.Alot of k-pop groups I also have noticed they go and do a album in japan then go back and do other stuff. But sometimes they do die down and either the members do their own thing or something else. But there are too many boy groups in K-pop and most of them look almost the same

I agree with Nyokou that the graduations will have a huge effect on the group like it did Morning Musume.
Also hope their fame won't last to long P-: the man who made them made onyako club that was huge in the 80s but died off in the early 90s

I was wondering
also for the decline in jpop international fans do you guys think it also might be because alot of company's don't allow their music on to youtube and it's a lot harder to accesses then like kpop. Especially Johnnys JR ugh their pr agent or whoever makes the desicion just doesn't make sense to me like in magazines and sometimes even on their own drama sites they black out the photos since it doesn't technically belong to johnny but still johnny got them the job ad their group is usually singing the theme. :dead:

The scale & ambition of the XXX48 thing is way bigger than the Onyanko Club, tho - that can't guarantee it won't collapse, of course.

Those anal policies of Johnny's have long been legendary around the region. I think the decline of J-pop is but a symptom of something bigger.

I find this quit sad, especially for Japanese artist who can actually sing, have talent and write their own stuff and aren't the only one ideal of beauty AKB48 shows(light skin, 92 lbs, big eyed) and AKB48 and all their subgroups alot of them have been topping the charts in 2011 so they have made it to mainstream their in commercials. dramas and etc and I read somewhere about their fans alot of them arent just older men but both young boys and girls, and what kind of message is AKB48 sending to them?
They've already become national idols representing the country, like Morning Musume in the past, which've now been eclipsed by them, even tho the latter were initially (albeit incorrectly) seen as a copycat/bootleg of the former. Some of their members have also been sent to my country to rally for donations for the Mar. quake/tsunami in northeast Japan last year.
And now they've been invited to perform the national anthem for the opening of the new baseball season this year:

Yet another sign that they've now been regarded as the face of the nation.

sadly AKB's popularity is very big and its like every single great thing japan does has to involve the girls in it.I do like it but at the same time its getting abit annoying seeing the same group do it and not let others get some fame.

They've even deliberately created their own official rival group, which's organizationally separate from the AKB systems - so they don't even let it be rivaled by artists other than their own:

That's a commonly seen marketing strategy, tho, which's why I've always said they're a pretty successful business.

And now they've got their anime, AKB0048: :oh:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJHP02cUY_s

It looks like a big production, tho, w/ some big-name production staff & voice actors. :)
The 2nd PV for that upcoming anime, w/ more info about it in the uploader's comments (in Japanese):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPBA_sMYCNU

Looks like they intended it to be a major thing - yet another sign of their attempting to cross over into various facets of Japanese society.

[EDIT 1]
A better-resolution version of the 1st PV linked in the above quote:

[EDIT 2]
There're some info about it in English in the comments below on the page linked immediately above. :)
