Not a fan of the new dub. It's a sign of the times, though. Voice actors used to get hired based on their talent alone. Now social media, fan following, and appearances play a big role in things. I watched a panel once with some 90s voice actors from Pokemon and they seemed fairly bitter about it (while keeping things professional, of course.)

All of the voices sound generic. The delivery sounds generic. I can't attest to their skill - I know Luna's VA has done some great work, for example, but she pretty much always sounds like the exact same person in every role she's played, so I'm not a fan. That being said, if Viz couldn't even be arsed to record more than one incantation for their attacks and transformation calls, I'm pretty confident they weren't spending much time calling for lines to be delivered with a good performance. Kind of sad, especially since the original S-SS dub fell victim to the same thing. (Though at least they bothered to record a unique attack/transformation call for each episode... :umno:)

My main issue with the Viz dub is that everyone just sounds the same. No one is really bad or anything, it's just very generic anime dub voices.
In the old dub, you could immediately tell who was speaking (barring a few characters who shared a voice actress).
Some characters in the Viz dub sound great, like Jupiter's and Uranus' and some are miscast in my opinion.
Most of them grew on me and I think they all sound better in Crystal.

The video quality is atrocious sometimes. I will take some graininess over the blurred-out, oversaturated blobs. There are times the whites are so bright it hurts my eyes when clashed with the magentas, pinks and oranges and then we get dark colors that get crushed to black or look like stains.

There are some episodes that faired better than others, but this does not look professionally done.

My other issue is I have a couple of discs (the blu rays) that just won't play and Viz's response was "return it to the retailer", which may have worked had I not had the sets nearly a year before watching them.
The DVDs worked just fine, but the menus were so awful and ugly, the subtitles were a blurry mess, too... and what's the point in buying a blu ray when you have to watch the DVD instead?

Sadly while Toei keep on pretending they have no masters to make a proper HD the DVDs will still look better. But no, not the VIZ ones - they screwed the dvds as well. The Madman dvds are the proper best sd quality available but not after S... I can forgive VIZ being incompetent with enconding, but them outright lying on their site back in the day with fake screenshots how the Japanese dvds look like was the lowest low.

If there is one thing that I don't like about Viz, it's them putting copyright on any Sailor Moon video that's on YouTube or other video sites.
Especially out of context Dic/Cloverway clips and fanmade videos that use original animation.

Like chill out Viz a few second clip of Serena saying “OhmygodheisTuxedoMaskIdontbelieveit” robotically isn’t going to hurt your blue-ray sales

I remember few years before VIZ announced the redud there were rumors Funimation would license and dub the series. For some reasons fans back then were against it. Why? I mean this is my opinion, but Funimation dubs are great and am sure they would have done a much better job.

Yeah that's true and there are Sailor Moon fans who still love the 90s dub too. In my personal opinion Viz could have found a way to release both dubs on DVD and Blu-ray without any problems, especially since the 90s dub is still very memorable and nostalgic to English speaking Sailor Moon fans. As for the original Sailor Moon animations, it's weird for Viz to put copyright on those videos since those original Sailor Moon animation videos are fanmade and not official.

Since we're talking 2009-early 2010s...

1. Monica Rial would have been a lead and with how she uses the same voice most of the time, she would have been as annoyingly bad as Stephanie.

Yes I never liked her long before everyone else hated her after the Vic [BLEEP].

2. Back then they had J. Michael Tatum writing most of their major dubs and after a point, he became as bad as Steven Foster (former writer and director for ADV/Sentai) and has pissed off plenty of fans of other big anime like Attack on Titan (season 1) & Free (season 2). Their other writers can be hit or miss but he was the only real bad one at that time.

3. Like with some companies (even Viz before 2014 with Ranma HD), FUNi tends to replace opening & ending videos with creditess versions with their own credits added in and as we all know, Sailor Moon had a couple which never had creditless versions released and under similar situations, FUNi had done some of the dumbest moves possible like pause videos to add their credits on a single frame (My Bride is a Mermaid), shrink the video so most of the screen is black with their own credits on both that and the video, affecting some last episode epilogues as well (DBZ movies, Sengoku Basara, parts of Initial D, Birdy The Mighty Decode, etc), repeat another company's mistake in regards to special openings when they fixed said mistake on a re-release before they closed up (Trigun).

^FUNi has since gotten a bit better about this in recent years but back then it was a mess.

So basically, we here would be having the same conversation as we are now about the Viz dub, especially if there's some of the same problems like miscasts, the dub script and the Toei-controlled sub translation (which they too have had to deal with since simulcasting One Piece in 2009).

Some of Funis stuff is okay. Some of it is awful.
The VAs are probably not a good fit for Sailor Moon though.
I personally don't care for the main faces of the VAs anymore after the drama there and would definitely want that drama away from Sailor Moon. (especially since they supposedly attacked on VA while ignoring one with more serious accusations because he was part of their clique.)

It's sad because most of the male voices are pretty good and memorable (at least for DBZ and One Piece).
Monica's Bulma is like nails on a chalkboard though and if they had made her Mars or something...*shudder* I doubt I could tolerate it.

I do think Funi would have injected more character into the senshi instead of having most of their lines sounding so off.

I also agree about how bad they would butcher some of the endings just to shove their credits in.

The Viz cast is bland in places, but they did get some talented people.

Also, Sailor Moon Crystal is currently trending on Netflix, today.

FUNI was apparently interested in Sailor Moon as early as 2003. There was a rumor awhile back IF Labs wanted to release some Sailor Moon figures but couldn't secure the rights.

This would have made the old fan speculation of having Laura Bailey as Usagi make sense since she didn't move out of Texas until the late 2000s.

Most people were pretty positive and excited at the prospect of Funimation potentially getting the license. This was circa 2010-2012 so they had just done Dragon Ball Z Kai not too long ago, saved One Piece from 4kids, and done the well regarded Full Metal Alchemist dub not that long ago. Dragon Ball Z was their only black mark against them (both as a dub and how they handled the home media release) and to a lesser extent Dragon Ball GT (which was kind of a punching bag even without a crappy dub)

And like I said before Funimation SHOULD have gotten the license. Doing Dragon Ball gave them experience dubbing older shows that Viz seemed to lack. Supposedly one of the problems with the Viz dub is they’re
not use to dubbing older anime which is why Sailor Moon sounds fandubish. There was a 24 year gap between the first Dragon Ball movie’s release in Japan and the Funimation dub and it sounds great.

Yes I never liked her long before everyone else hated her after the Vic [BLEEP].
Yeah but anyone who hates on her for speaking out against being sexually harassed by a creep is kind of a turd sandwich and their opinions don’t matter.

Disliking her as a performer is an entirely different thing and is at least valid.

IIRC The rumor started around a time where FUNI's talent pool was pretty limited. They only had a handful of voice actresses, which made some people wary about them getting Sailor Moon. I like Laura Bailey, but I'm not sure I'd want her as Usagi. She could make a good Minako, Ami, or Hotaru.

I was watching the Ayakashi x Senshi clash dubbed into English (Viz) on YouTube these days, and the dubbed lines sounded like a stiff adaptation of sub dialogue IMO. I liked Sheh's performance, though.
