Yes, I have to agree the new dub works a lot better with Crystal. The scrpts and direction are much better there. But Sailor Moon old show sound is a hell to work it. A sound director and friend of mine tried to make a fandub of the break up scene from R and it took him a lot of effort to separate the sound effects, voices and music from a show produced in mono and then converted to stereo. It is of course possible, just very hard. The movies dub sounds better and the mixing smoother as they have 5.1 sound

Sorry for the double post, but here is something that Viz screwed. I clearly remember at the begining when they announced the dub they said they cast people who can sing, which made me thing of a full dub, including the songs being translated adapted and sung by the respected cast member. With the exception of one or two songs that are sung by che character on screen like Rei in her concert, the rest of the background songs, op and eds are left in Japanese. Why do you mislead peoplle, why after so many years they are still doing half-assed job. It would have been so cool to make it in English entierly, with songs and all but they are cheap. Israel has made most of the songs in Hebrew and it is really cool. On top of all songs even have no subtitles or the translation is horrible like the ''gomen-ne"in the op subtitles. The subtitles are ok, although the timing and separation between lines are not very proffessional. I know English speaking countries use a lot less subtitles and has less experience in this regard, so it is not that bad considerably.

Yeah it seems weird to boast about how the cast can sing when it only really matters in regards to Cristina Vee.

Obligatory reminder of that time Viz left Gomen ne in the English speaking dub in episode 7

Not dubbing the songs was a major letdown for me. Although, considering how awful Rei's songs turned out, I don't really care anymore.
Considering they are doing it for like four songs sung by a character on screen which is really once in season 2 and like couple of times in season 5, I guess they didn't try that hard. If they committed to full treatment they would have used actual lyrics writer for the songs and all. It is a shame, considering Christima Vee is a not so bad song writer herself and has made some quite nice English covers.

Why would it be a problem for Viz and not for Israel? This is strange. And Osrael dubbed most of the op/ed songs as well. I really find the whole process of dubbing a song fascinating if done right.

In this case, we can blame Toei and/or Naoko, there was also what happened with Mexico when they got to releasing the Talk Box DVDs. They had newly-made versions of undubbed ED songs recorded for those DVDs but were forced to remove them at the last minute. You also look at Crystal and the only country to have those songs dubbed was Italy since everyone else had them in Japanese.

There are other Toei shows which had similar issues such as when FUNi stopped dubbing the One Piece OP & ED songs when they got to Water 7 and Toei trying to force Engrish versions of songs get used in recent Dragon Ball (Buu Kai, the two recent movies and the first OP of Super).

Yeah, them not singing any of the other songs outside what's on the show itself? I say that would be false advertising there. And I'm really hating that move. They say one thing, but in the end, you don't get what you want. And honestly, it sucks that we'll never hear any cover songs of the image songs or any other songs. And I hate to say this, but for Kate Davis/Higgens, I'm afraid listening to the 2 songs sung (as Pauline) in Mario Odyssey are the closest things to hearing Ami-chan actually sing in the US in a way.

Kate also sang the official English cover for "Violet Snow" in the anime, Violet Evergarden.

Having not watched much of the Viz dub myself. I find the voices to not stand out as much as their 90's counterpart. The ones that do stand out in the Viz cast would be Moon, Jupiter, Pluto especially but with the 90's counterparts, you could tell who is who.
I find the opposite true. The DiC senshi voices all sound alike to me.

I think all the three dubs have quite different voices and I never had problem with diversity. I remember at some point with the new VIZ dub I found Luna and Rei similar on some occassion but it was very early on. Last night I just bumped on a video on youtube and it reminded me of another problem I have with Viz. It was from the episode with Minako and the kindergardeners on the school bus. Similar to Shingo all these 4 little old boys had deeper than mine male voices, which is so jarring and it seems to be quite persistant casting issue, even for background extra characters.

^To be fair Dic had the same problem with casting adult males to voice kindergarten boys. Also with Sammy’s male classmates in the doll episode.

Like Sammy was the only one Optimum/Dic bothered to find a realistic prepubescent boy voice for.

As far as the main cast the only voices I get confused are Michelle Ruff and whoever voices Naru and also Kate Higgins and Cherami Leigh. Although really all the female teenage voices have a damn near similar timbre. You can’t honestly say the same about the Optimum dub

Have you ever actually like watched the DiC dub? How do they all sound alike to you?
I'd be interested in hearing a response to this, Redneonglow -- we all have different tastes and different perceptions of things, but it's so hard for me to imagine how the DiC voices for the Inners all sound alike to you. When I was a kid the Serena voices all blended together, but compare any of Serena's voice actors to the DiC voices of Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina -- they all have such specific cadences and tones.

From what I've heard from the Viz dub, I don't get that same breadth of diversity -- but I also haven't given it a fair shot, to be honest.

With Viz, Rei and Mako definitely have louder, more aggressive voices than the others which are more higher pitched, with Ami having a softer voice, Usagi having a whinier, cartoony voice, and Minako similar to Usagi but less whiny.

I've only seen a few DiC episodes and clips, but the senshi are all smoother and softer sounding and within range of each other. For someone who only saw a few DiC episodes, this was tough for me to follow:

EDIT: Used better Viz example videos
