Not saying it’s bad or anything, just making an observation. It was especially unusual for the male romantic lead in kids shows aimed at girls in the 90’s to be anything other than conventionally attractive.

I find it amusing people just kind of assume if this thing took off it would adapt stuff from later arcs and have actual progression.

Like, if almost definitely would have been a standard episodic kids show with no real story progression where kids can come in at any time. That's probably why the team is already formed in the first episode. The whole Beryl has already captured the jewels from the other 4 planets was probably just the show feeling the need to justify why Sailors Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, and Pluto aren't around.

I guess if the series exploded in popularity and lasted well past the standard 65 episodes they might of looked ahead to later series to take stuff from. But as? Nah it was just going to be Queen Beryl as the only villain with no additional team members or new villains.

Also had did I just notice the standard henchmen are designed from Geisen? I just thought they were storm trooper rip offs.
Didn’t even the Power Rangers loosely adapt multiple seasons of the original Super Sentai? Considering Saban Moon was obviously meant to be a Power Rangers esque attempt at Sailor Moon they would’ve surely incorporated the other seasons as well.

The key difference here is that Power Rangers actually takes footage from Super Sentai and recuts it around their original footage. Toonmakers Moon does no such thing and is 100 percent original footage. Power Rangers was beholden to what the Sentai does (they even initially paid Toei to film more stuff for them with Zyuranger suits to keep the brand identity in Power Rangers before that got too expensive so they elected to adapt just the giant robot footage from the following Sentai and film their own original footage for the ground fights then that got too expensive and then they elected to adapt the Sentai mold of new costumes and name every year). Toonmakers Moon wouldn't be bound to what the Japanese anime did the same way Power Rangers was bound by Super Sentai. There's zero reason to believe that they would have taken stuff from later series or have any progressing plot.

Rocky and Stephen indicated that the plan was to follow the original series in terms of basic plots, so I imagine there would be at least some kind of progressing plot. I mean, you have to keep introducing new good guys and bad guys to sell dolls and action figures, and introducing new weapons and vehicles to sell toys.

This actually made me happier than Eternal tbh. The last time "new" Sailor Moon content got me excited was Crystal III back in 2016.
Eternal also kept getting delayed that all the hype for it died down. It was just kind of like...oh it's out and it's not too bad.

I don't think anyone ever expected the full pilot for Toonmakers Moon to be released.

I actually think the basic concept would've been very interesting for a children's show, although I'm trying to figure out why the Princess Fighters live on Earth if they have to constantly go back to space and fight monsters exclusively on other planets. Obviously there was no need for a fully-animated western adaptation, but I kinda think a fully live action TV series in the style of Power Rangers would've been fun back then, even if it would've turned out really campy. It could've even followed the story relatively closely. I don't think Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon had a huge budget.

One question I have in terms of the plot is that hypothetically if the royal families perished when Queen Beryl attacked their galleon (which they may not if Darian is alive as Tuxedo Mask) then who is ruling and protecting the planets while Queen Beryl is still waging war? I mean Queen Serenity is still there but she is just one person. If they actually did perish to me it would make far more sense for the Princess Warriors to stay in their own Dimension and assume rulership and fight in the war against Beryl as opposed to coming to "our dimension" plus the idea that Beryl can't follow to our dimension removes the sense of threat that the former series had of Beryl and the other villains potentially winning, taking over and even destroying our world.

Of course this didn't apply in the OG anime, manga etc as the Silver Millennium was not in a different dimension from ours but the same and beyond that when Beryl waged her war against The Moon Kingdom it also caused the destruction of the Other planets and their civilizations and Earth having to restart it's evolution.

Honestly if I could have done the series I wouldn't have that Victoria and the Princess Warriors were sent into a different dimension but rather into the future and they have to go back in time to deal with Queen Beryl and her forces. In fact I would add an extra enemy group. I would have that our timeline is the worst possible timeline and that our timeline is one where Beryl has her victory but she is quickly deposed by various members for the former Silver Millennium. This enemy group would become The Black Moon Clan who is a Shadow Society that rules our world. So I would have that Queen Beryl and Prince Diamond are 2 of the major villains.

I might even have that some of the Black Moon Clan Royalty are some of the people of the planets who rose up against Beryl but become tyrannical like her. Diamond and Sapphire would have been from the Moon, Rubeus would be from Mars and Emerald would be from Jupiter.

I’m so happy that the Saban Moon pilot has been found! I honestly thought that Toei and Naoko had it locked in a vault somewhere. I never expected it to be at the Library of Congress. To me it was one of those so bad it’s good things. I’m so happy that this important piece of Sailor Moon history has been found. Plus, it just feels right for it to be found during the 30th anniversary of the franchise. I probably would’ve watched this in 90s had the show gotten greenlit. I hope that Toei or Viz doesn’t try and copyright strike this.

I think the animated segments would’ve been more bare-able if the character designs weren’t so.. weird. It’s like they tried to fuse the more realistic faces of She-Ra/Jem with more cartoony proportions for the bodies and it looks really off.

If the final version looked more like Barbie and the Rockers or something similar I don’t think I would’ve minded so much.

magical girl, sailor moon, usagi tsukino / (rkgk) トゥーンメーカーズのセーラームーン - pixiv
this would be it, by an artist called KJnanika
EDIT: also found it just now on twitter, but I see it's the same artist
Just went on twitter seeing how twitter at large is taking the news, and now I saw art of all 5 of them in the late (SuperS-Stars) 90's anime style, it's done by a different artist though.
his/their Mercury looks a lot better than my Katerina, and that settei predates the find.

Edit: just realized that twitter post was crediting another artist, I'm so stupid.
So the real artist of that picture is sassyspice.
