Disney wanted to adapt Sailor Moon into a live action movie after they acquired DiC. This was circa 1997 when the first 65 episodes had already aired and the last 17 episodes of R were either being dubbed for YTV or DiC and Irwin Toys were in the process of getting that worked out.

DiC never expressed interest in a live-action movie before that and were always going to just dub the anime. The appeal to DiC was always "the animation has already been done for us and it had a proven successful toyline around the world)
Thanks for clarifying, I think Disney and Bandai not collaborating for a Sailor Moon live action is what prevented a western live-action adaptation of SM from happening.

Yeah, there's a reason people jokingly/mockingly say that the name "DiC" was short for "Doing it Cheap".

Yep and Fred Ladd confirmed DiC was under the impression it wasn't going to be much different than how they outsourced their own shows being animated by Japanese studios, they were taken a back by "violence and sexual content" and hired Ladd to help them adapt it

I can see why that original presentation was initially turned down by US executives. From the footage they used of the anime and musical, it made the series look like it was primarily about dancing.

That, plus the whole notion of the girls dying in the season 1 finale. Death and murder of the hero characters weren't exactly something executives approved of for children's cartoons way back then.

Though, with the way that narrator in the presentation mispronounced "Endymion", that leads me to wonder if we got the DiC dub name of "Darien" through a game of telephone that started with this presentation mispronouncing "Endymion" as "In Damian", which might have led to someone misinterpreting as it saying his name was just "Damian", which then could have somehow gotten further corrupted into the similar-sounding name "Darian" (per the spelling in Toon Makers script), which then got finalized as "Darien" in the DiC dub.

A bit weird for them to provide this info in a pitch to the North American market. But they tried to hide the inners' nudity in the transformation sequences, though.

I think that having Sailor Moon (VIZ version, uncensored) broadcasted as a Saturday morning cartoon on TV (ABC, NBC, CBS) would still be challenging… it would cause a backlash.

Streaming? Yes, sure, no problem.

They didn't necessarily seem aware of what did and didn't fly past American BS&P.

When Toei made additional Zyuranger footage for Saban to use for Power Rangers they included stuff Saban obviously was never going to use like a Kaiju flipping the Rangers off and the Rangers being hung up on crosses

I feel like they had some idea, if you notice only Sailor Moon's transformation is shown in full. :googly:

This presentation was made by Renaissance Atlantic and Bandai America, two American companies. They knew.

We could have Team Angel with Joss Whedon as director instead of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer...Bandai was in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong people to create a live-action sailor moon adaptation.
Whedon had no idea of what SM was before having Buffy green lit into pre-production.

And yet Buffy is the closest thing we have to a good western live action of Sailor Moon.
That's because Fran Kuzui (Buffy movie director, married to Katsusuke Kuzui, the other Buffy exec producer) basically told Whedon to change some stuff in the script and add some elements from SM, bc she wanted to direct something that made her feel empowered like SM did.

Yes, it is not happening because they did not have the right people for the project, that is what I am saying earlier.
To be fair, we have no idea of who was involved in this project. Hypothetically speaking, even if there were now super successful people involved, that's hardly something that someone in their right mind would claim credit for...

From The Masked Monocle's Newgrounds page.

ALSO
Someone had asked why Victoria's skin was so tan and The Masked Monocle replied:
"So i was actually using the eyedropper tool to pull the exact colors off the cels, but they may have been scanned in kinda dark, so that's what I picked up. I'll probably go through and fix it later "

Should these posts be moved to a new thread specifically about their project?
