I wish Viz would’ve released a complete series set with the better masters. Also, what’s gonna happen for the movies? Are we gonna get a nice box set and a different cover for the R movie?

Probably a Triple Feature with all 3 films in 1 disc with nothing else.

I just looked at my old blu-rays and i'm really really hoping that's what they do because I want to get rid of my fugly R movie cover that doesn't match the S and SuperS movies

One more thing I would like to add about Super S and Sailor Star, the original Japanese DVD released back in like 2003 are actually the best source of the show. Toei's blu-ray upscale suffers horrendously on color bleeding on all the edges, which were originally just noise on the dvd that can be fix. The blu-ray magnified the problem without treating the noise and now it is unfixable and impossible to color correct.

A comparison shot here for Sailor Star, look at all those red/green color bleed along the edge on the blu-ray in comparison to the original DVD. I also added a fixed version of the dvd with AI upscale.

Sailor Moon Sailor Star DVD vs blu-ray - Imgsli

So if you had already brought the two seasons from the previous part1/part2 releases, there is really not enough of an incentive to repurchase again, considering this subpar quality.
The AI upscale definitely looks great! Hopefully in a few years we'll get another Blu-Ray or 4K release with AI upscales that'll actually make the footage look good. And I have the previous part1/part2 releases and while the new blu-rays are not great for 2023 standards, they're still TONS better than Viz's 2014 release

There’s actually a decent Australian Box set available now of all seasons using the same Toei masters that Viz is currently reissuing the show using.

Did someone jump the gun in uploading that? No page for it at Right Stuf has me thinking they did and that it was meant to go public tomorrow.

EDIT:

Never mind...

Am I nuts, or Kate Higgins sounds A LOT like Karen Bernstein when she says "we simply won't allow it"???
I usually find the Viz dub to have a serious lack of authenticity, but it's almost like they cherry-picked this small scene because each voice sounds full of personality there. They don't sound bored in a recording booth like most scenes I got to see.

Don't forget that Karen Bernstein didn't voice Mercury in the Cloverway dub of S. Liza Balkan did.

So, the colors are a bit brighter and clearer compared to the muddy and dark colors of the past BD releases?
Still looks quite dark on certain colors. I wonder how some episodes look like that of the UraNep episode.
Hopefully, the SuperS release is in this vein too and the colors are more vivid.

Only a few more years before Toei releases it's 4K ultra HD remaster at 40k yen half the season!

The old SuperS & Stars sets used the Japanese upscale with the only issue on Viz's end being the incorrect color space.

See these posts (unconfirmed for SuperS but it was there for Stars)

Got my copy [of season 1] last week, can confirm it's the Toei remaster. And finally Viz Media stopped doing stupid thing like messing up the color like they did with the Sailor Stars releases.

What did Viz do with the Stars colors? I thought it was confirmed that Stars is the same as the Japanese BD?
They did the wrong color matrix transformation. Here's some background info, SD/DVD video uses the Rec601 color matrix while HD video uses Rec709, the difference between the two are in the red and green color. Normally when we're upscaling a SD video to HD, we'll also need to do a Rec601 to Rec709 conversion to the color.

When Viz got the remaster from Japan, it was already in HD, which means Japan already did the 601->709 conversion. There was really nothing needed to do. But Viz took it and stupidly did another 601-709 conversion again, which messed up the color.

Here's a comparison shot:

I’m glad they have access to art other than Marco's stuff. I'm a fan of Marco but it's nice seeing old artwork being reused.

That being said, I'm still confused as to why the cover art is so awful. Do they need a new graphic designer or what?

I've softened up to Marco's work over the years. I've always thought he was really good at imitating the old 90s style, but I thought it was frustrating that Toei preferred to commission new artwork in that style as opposed to going back and using things they otherwise never used before. On Instagram for example I just saw a really cool promotional artwork for S that apparently was in a magazine, I had never seen it before -- it would be awesome if Toei could use more things like that.

I have double/triple/quadruple-dipped in the 90s Blu-ray/DVD releases, both the Japanese and American ones....and I'm tempted to do it again. God help me.

I wish they would've given him more artistic license as oppose to just redrawing older art. A lot of his fan art pieces are much more interesting. The graphic designers at VIZ also suck and use Marco's artwork like cheap clip art. It's sad.

The covers are so plain, basic and boring…
Why can’t they do something similar to the European( German, Spain) boxes?
