The discourse over 4:3 is odd to me because it’s obvious that the widescreen presentation was always the original intended viewing experience . It’s not as though it was cropped for the home video releases intentionally. The animators knowingly created a product that was being filmed and matted to standards that differ from the TV Series . The unfinished art and backgrounds that are seen in the 4:3 print on the pioneer DVD sets are clear indications that it wasn’t meant to be seen that way.
I'd guess the outrage would be because the previous showing of the features had "4:3" on the back.
I never noticed any unfinished backgrounds in those versions. If you have time and this isn't too bothersome, can you show some examples? If it was intended to be viewed in 16:9 its a little strange they intentionally formatted it where there would be cut off parts of word boxes like this
It's also strange there's doesn't seem to be a 4:3 version of Ami's first love yet there's pictures of it in Animanga and this Japanese commercial
I just assumed the 4:3 versions got lost or badly preserved or something.
