Watching Crystal for the first time

Since I finished PGSM [loved it :thumbsup:] I thought I could also try watching Sailor Moon Crystal and documenting my experience with it as well.

Ok the thread's name is kind of a lie. I have watched the first few Acts of Crystal [twice actually]. the first time was immediately after finishing the 90s anime. I didn't dislike it or anything, I just don't think I was giving it a fair chance. I feel the thing that turned me off was just the colors and [relative] lack of expressions. But since I've recently started branching out into different parts of the franchise [and saw of the endings songs on Crystal 3] Now might be a good time to try again.

Unlike PGSM I probably Will not be doing 2 episodes EVERYDAY. I'll probably still do it; I just won't feel as obligated to. I also might as well compare my thoughts to 90s version with each respective ACT.

*Note I haven't seen the manga [and haven't planned to either so...... Let's see where this goes :googly:]

ACT 1
  • Besides the beginning portion, it's pretty much the same as the 90s episode. I'll mostly just get comparisons out the way.
  • The intro's fine but I especially like the stylishness of S1 Moonlight Densetstu [and now PGSM's intro]
  • I LOVE how Usagi's hair move in this [at least when its smooth], I don't know why. :usagi:
  • When I first watched the OG, I thought Usagi was 16 and felt like she looked older than she was but as I got more used to it, I can definitely feel "yup she's 14 " Certain shot in this make me feel she could be around 18. :P
  • I don't know why but there was something about how Usagi met Luna in the original that make me keep going back to that scene. There was something about that ominous noise.
  • Usagi kisses Luna. [I'm remembering in PGSM Minako's company president kissed :luna: and :artemis: as plushies] :orly:
  • Umino: Exams are basically just games you know.
  • Naru: "Game? OMG, kill yourself" :angry:
  • Umino's [Japanese] voice is adorable.
  • I haven't made a complete opinion on the 3d transformations.
  • I've never thought she would have to come up with a name. I thought Luna would just tell her.
  • Sailor Moon's scream breaks the glass in this one. Thats gonna cost!
  • Everything seems fine so far! :happy: I don't even mind the designs. I actually like how it looks different. [not the biggest fan of the lips but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The first Acts will be similar to the 90’s anime (even Act 4), but by Act 6 you start to notice a difference.

  • The posts above have me worried ::eeklez::unsure:
  • PLEASE tell me the YouTube version is the good one.
  • Alright so, When I watched the 90s version the 1st time, I was basically speedrunning it VERY impatiently. I think the episodes I had really liked the first time in this section respectively was 6 and 8.
  • Since then, I've grown more of an appreciation of episodes 1 and 3. Regardless I was still very addicted for some reason.
  • Not the biggest fan of Luna's design in this. :luna:
  • Still not a fan of the background colors :orly:
  • You can get prizes for playing classic arcade games? In the arcades where I'm from the only prize you get from classic arcade games is having a fun time playing a game. ^_^
  • Not sure how I feel about Motoki's face. :creeper:
  • I never though the transformation pens could function as pen. [who would've thought :googly:]
  • By how that Lady reacts you'd think that her parents were killed by a vicious group of colorful pens or something. Good lord! :unsure:
  • The way Luna attacked her! :rofl:
  • I actually really like their introduction speeches in this.
  • Will their attacks have unique animations every time. If so that's really neat. :yay:
  • The ending to me sounds kind of generic, not bad at all, just generic. Nice animation though.

People are telling you not to watch the Netflix version. Because they have non-fixed animation mistakes. Youtube and Hulu versions are fine.

ACT 3 [I'll squeeze in a third today]
  • Has anyone noticed how ..... obtuse Usagi's reactions to the girls were when she first met them. :mischief:::love:::usagi:
  • How sweet of Jadeite to reveal his name and organization. Really helping the cause.
  • Impressive, Sailor Moon can have casual conversation while being loudly blasted near the face w/ wet ice magic. #Skills
  • I actually like Rei's transformation in this. Not COMPLETELY sure about the poses, but the transformation itself, really nice. :rei:
  • Is "Moon Tiara Boomerang" recycled? It's fine if it is, just asking?
  • "Evil Spirit, be exorcized." I've heard the Viz dub for Crystal had her say "Evil Spirits begone". Did they swap the two for the 90s [sub] and Crystal [dub]? :?
  • First finding Queen Beryl somehow in PGSM, now finding the way back home from some type of dimension[I think] Rei's just an expert with these shortcuts I tell you! :rei::clap:

There is definitely stock footage used, so you'll be seeing Boomerang (and others... sometimes inappropriately...) more than once over the series.

I can't comment with certainty on the subs because I don't know how all the streaming services have handled them since, but the original subs that aired with Crystal were rough, to say the least. Very literal and awkward translations at times, so that may be what happened with Mars' phrase.
