I disagree.

First, I said it once, Crystal is not faithful to the manga. Not only because of the small changes made in the story, actually that's not the main issue, but because Crystermos hasn't got the intimate connection that exists between the atmosphere of the manga and Takeuchi's inner world. It's just a hollow reinterpretation. Crystermos would have been faithful even with changes in the story if Takeuchi's worldview had been respected.

Second, Crystal never managed to capture Takeuchi's fairy-like stroke. Only Ikuko Itoh achieved it in those flashbacks in episodes 18 or 68, or Kazuko Tadano in episode 28 (illustrations of Yumemi), and it was noticeable it was intentional, since it's a style impossible to animate.
Hmm... then it's not that impossible to achieve Takeuchi's spirit world, is it?
All we'd need is a focus on the characters' expression being very shoujo-esque, have the aesthetic of the manga with the character's hair always hanging in the wind - no need for animation, just cheat like in Itoh's flashback in 68 or the music going dun, dun, dun! like for the time when the girls are investigating Nehenelia's spider webs over the city in SuperS and more importantly watercolor backgrounds with the visual of them fading away

Perhaps with the SMC 3 budget, they could have achieved something around those lines.
Who knows, perhaps Takeuchi's manga would have been better delivered as an Animix Project rather than a typical anime.

Yes, but people would get tired of watching an entire series with that style quickly. It's not practical. It only works and has an impact the way Itoh and Tadano used it in the original anime.

True, Toei could have tried something artistic with a re-interpretation movie adapting the Dark Kingdom arc but yeah a whole season like that, let alone a whole series would be a chore to sit through...
I really don't know how they could have pulled it through because recently I rewatched the SMC3 and pulling out preconceived notions I had about the series - mainly the 90s events and character relationships, there's actually plotholes all over...

Yeah! We should make a thread only for Crystermos/Manga's plotholes. :siren::siren::siren::siren: :booze:

Oh my God, that'll be a big bone to chew! :zoid:
Plotholes, abandoned storylines, conceptual ideas left hanging, characters being retconned (cough, cough Rei...)...I don't have the strength
I recently realized the best way to enjoy Crystermos is to actually watch the 90s anime first, then the Crystal adaptation - your brain automatically clears up every plothole and lack of characterization with the elements of the 90s anime :P

ACT 13
  • The girls attack Matallia and succeed. :minako::rei::ami::mako:
  • The girls yelling Matallia didn't match their mouths.
  • The girls use magic or something to wake up Sailor Moon :usagi:
  • She's not dead, Mamoru's watch saved her. Mamo's not dead either the Generals' stones saved him. ::tuxspeedmask:
  • Artemis takes Luna to the Moon :luna::artemis:
  • Matailla covers the Earth. The moans were kinda creepy as corrupted humans surrounded SM.
  • SM's going to fight Matallia with her crescent moon rod. She has to aim for the spot on her head.
  • Sorry, I have nothing interesting to talk about. Animation on the weaker side this time around. Probably saving up for the finale.
  • :grey: [this is how I'm feeling right now]

Yes, Venus killed QB in the manga, and it wasn't some goofy necklace-breaking, it was a full-on Venus-be-pissed-stabbing.
If Venus stabbed QB there and then, I would've smiled SO HARD. When I was watching it, I had loved how intense she got at that moment. Too bad they changed it. :P

*Other note: I thought it was interesting this sword in space is stronger than diamond and also poisonous. there was a mineral found on an asteroid called "Lonsdaleite" that's apparently stronger than diamond. There's also the fact that moonstone has compounds that can be toxic [I know poison, and toxicity aren't the same but still] [Just thought that was interesting, honestly it doesn't really matter cuz' #Magic I think Ami explained it as well :ami:]

Also, even if the Generals' stones protected Mamo from a fatal blow wouldn't the "poison" getting in his wound be a bit of a problem. It did show a slice through his chest, nonetheless. To be fair they're probably about to dwell that. [and if they don't, again it doesn't really matter that much to me] :googly:

ACT 14
  • I actually liked the last fight. She finally banished Matallia back to the Negaverse.
  • :luna:: "She is praying, I will pray with her too." I keep getting Earthbound flashbacks :creeper: :twistedevil::cthulhu::zoid:
  • Human Luna!?
  • They animated a 360 turn. that counts for something right!
  • So, this part of the Manga is where that kiss in the "R movie" came from.
You can search the Earth through Mamoru's hand. ::eeklez:
  • The Silver Millenium came back
  • I'm starting to actually like Sailor Moon's transformation theme. Though this new one is pretty much the same.:usagi:
  • Usagi got mugged by a munchkin :chibiusa::fork:
  • I liked the finale
  • Will post final thoughts on part some other time. This seems to be much more continuous than the 90s series where you could end it there.

CRYSTAL I
  • I guess I'm alright with it honestly. :P
  • :usagi:::tuxspeedmask:: The thing I liked the most was UsaMamo's relationship, which for me is good since they devote a large chunk of time to it. It may be my favorite version of their relationship.
  • I never had any problems with the 90s version's, I like plenty of moments here and there, but it wasn't the strongest [also SEVERAL ppl have essays about how its actually terrible so...yeah].
  • In PGSM I liked it a lot to but some of the moments between them near the end were a bit eh. I just wished they had more positive downtime so I could imagine them together more.
  • Whether I would say I prefer this Usagi and Mamoru too their 90s/PGSM counterparts is debatable.
  • I liked Queen Beryl more in this than the 90s version [though PGSM version is bae:kiss:]. :luna: was also nice to see here, She's so sweet, I love her here.
  • Everyone else though
    no, that means no P-:
  • The animation: [refer to the Gif above]
  • I still feel the same way about the designs. I like that they're different and they look fine to me [when done right of course].
  • It still generally felt like an elongated movie. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more that way [not completely sure tho]
  • Moral of the story........ PGSM is my favorite version of the "Dark Kingdom arc"!!!:circles::dance:

Congrats. The worst part of Crystal is behind you. If you enjoyed or tolerated Dark Kingdom arc you will actually enjoy Crystal
