I'm loving the play by play and ratings for each episode. I'm SO biased because I love the Stars arc the most and have watched and rewatched it SO MANY TIMES, so it's nice to hear how it lands for people watching it for the first time. Can't wait to hear more of your opinions as you finally reach the end!! <3
Glad to hear it. :)

Let's go!

-Episode 188 - Invitation to Terror: Usagi's Night Flight-

Interesting... I always found the episodes with the senshi's cover blown to do a good job of shaking up the formula. Interested in seeing where this goes.

(Venus) "Could it be Chibi-Chibi came to give us (atashi-tachi) give us this power?"

I wish! No upgrades for you. :(

Siren seems very confident in her plan. And I see Nyanko lurking in the shadows... That doesn't bode well. Usually the next general-type only shows up once someone's slated to die soon...

It's funny to see Usagi freaking out over wanting to be on the plane, but uh, did the team forget or just rewrite Makoto here? She's supposed to be afraid of planes after the loss of her parents, right? She doesn't seem to mind anymore. I'd chock it up to the fangirl overwhelming any phobias, but it feels like another instance of the writers forgetting their own characters' backgrounds...

Oh, WHY do the bad guys always overthink this? You went through the trouble of delivering a handwritten letter directly to Usagi's address and didn't think to just wait around and take her out there? I mean, trapping her on a plane in the air DOES seem like a good way of keeping her from fighting back, but you could literally just sneak up on Usagi whenever. Sound asleep in her bed. Sigh.

It was a clever way to save some frames, sure, but I thought it was cute seeing the finished product of their performance in the Mars-centric episode here. A little continuity never hurts.

Seiren's putting the passengers to sleep? How kind. Considering Galaxia intends to take over the whole universe and all, it's rather considerate of her to give everybody a calm nap instead of just killing them all.

Awww, Seiya. Protecting their little bun-head like they promised.

YEAH! Crank that OST! I love the Starlights' theme. And it's kind of cool seeing their original transformations used as a shortened version here so they can get on with the story while still having their moment in the spotlight.

Can someone tell me what the lyric song is that played when the Inners are transforming? I like it.

Thank goodness they had their fight on an old-school plane on a premium floor. These days it's so cramped it'd be even worse than when they were all crammed into Usagi's living room.

I have to wonder... are the Inners just seriously going into overkill on the 'Galactica Tsunami' here, or despite its goofy appearance, is she still attacking with some oomph?

The frame of Galaxia holding out her hand to attack Siren is gorgeous. I wonder if anyone is lucky enough to own the cel.

Oof. Siren's death is pretty intense. We've seen baddies get killed by their own often enough, but the suspensful leadup of her screaming and looking at her braces in horror is actually pretty horrifying. I imagine kids were genuinely scared of Galaxia at that point in the original airing. (Also Kikuko Inoue [Siren] is amazing and that helps to really sell the scene)

I'm not sure what the main feeling is behind the Inners and Starlights staring at each other so intently at the end. Are they upset because the Starlights are technically invaders? Or is it because the secret-identity-gender thing is such a shock? Both? I dunno.

Episode score: 9.5/10. Genuinely solid episode. Animation was great throughout, no nonsense fluff-filler, every senshi present got to actually do something, and major plot developments happened. Nice one.

-Episode 189 - Duty or Friendship: Conflict Between the Sailor Guardians -

Let me take this moment to say that using the episode previews as Usagi's letters to Mamo is really cute and clever.

Venus: "But what a shock! To think that the Three Lights were actually girls! I guess this means that my love life is officially over!"

They're acknowledging that the Three Lights (not the Starlights) are girls... so... does that mean they're basically just using a disguise wand-like ability here to change their physical form? I've heard of the story where Naoko wasn't happy with how they handled the Starlights being men, but this seems to contradict that. Are they dudes or not?!

Jupiter (in response): "Yeah, but Taiki is still Taiki, so we can still hang out with them like always, right?"
Jupiter has prior experience with getting mixed up-romanticish feelings for Haruka, so leave it to her to be the most chill one of the bunch about this revelation. Seriously, even in this day and age, that's a good response to finding out someone isn't the gender you expected/thought.

Man, all the Starlights sans Seiya are genuinely so cold-hearted. They shared both their senshi and non-senshi lives together and yet Taiki and Yaten really couldn't care less about their well-being. 100% committed to being Princessu-simps. What was their plan? Find Kakyuu and then flee the planet and hide for the rest of their existence from Galaxia?

Galaxia: I sense a huge wave of energy coming from the third planet of the solar system.

Uh, yeah, there's like, *squint* 13 different Sailor Senshi there? No wonder...

New generals are always so willing to talk smack before they ever step foot on the battlefield in SM. You'll be in trouble soon enough I'm sure, Nyanko...

Aww, Rei's doing fortune telling! I don't know why they decided to put her in a sort of middle-eastern-inspired garb, but it sort of reads like a callback to her in SM:R (manga arc) when she was fortune telling at the school.

It took Rei a while to figure out that was Seiya sitting in front of her. Because he's wearing... sunglasses? Yeesh. No wonder it's so easy to keep a secret identity in the SM universe.

Aww, Rei. She can be so sweet with Usagi sometimes.

Uggggh. Yaten and Taiki are like overly aggressive dogs the moment Seiya starts speaking to Usagi at the radio show. The way they're glaring around the room at the mere mention of moonlight... calm down, y'all.

GEEZ why are the Starlights SO ANNOYING about Usagi? Taiki and Yaten are utterly single-minded. Seiya and Usagi are having a simple conversation and they lose their damn minds. And then the "This has nothing to do with you!" from Yaten to Usagi? Uh, pretty sure it does, bro. What, do you own Seiya?

Yikes. Crow's first Phage is actually a bit scary. Seiya and the Inners would have lost their damn minds if they'd come out there to find Sailor Moon sliced into ribbons by this guy.

*Random Thought* Sailor Moon is like a caster/mage in a standard video game party composition. The others are technically weaker than her, but she needs time and safety in order to perform her attack/damage spike. Without their protection, she's squishy and vulnerable and would likely get taken out before she could do anything. */Random Thought*

Aww, poor Seiya. Protecting Usagi and getting hurt.

EXCUSE ME? "Every bad thing that's happened to us"?! All they've done since you idiots have shown is up is try to clean up the messes you've made by drawing Galaxia's attention to the planet. Losing your own princess, failing to find her, being willing to kill humans instead of asking for help - that's YOUR doing.

Taiki and Yaten suck. They're willing to blame anyone but themselves for their problems. They say Seiya's to blame, then Seiya tries to save Usagi without transforming because they wouldn't let him. Now he's hurt and they're saying it's Moon's fault! He probably could have countered/tanked that if you'd let the poor guy transform!

Maybe Kakyuu is hiding from these idiots more than she is Galaxia. :|

Episode score: 7.5/10. I like the plot progression here, and it's nice to get some actual character development with Usagi and Seiya. But watching this one was infuriating because of the Starlights. I'd always heard a lot of distaste for Yaten and Taiki in the fan community, but I had no idea it would get this bad.

When did they bring that up in the 90s anime?

Everyone always talks a big game, but would you actually be able to tell these are the same people?

Or this person with a fake mustache.

Were you going to watch the rest ..... I just would've like to see someone else watch/review the show for once ^_^'

"not understanding what we've suffered"
Every time the Starlights say something like that, I think of this.

Actually, I think the writers were adapting the manga and Naoko’s ideas, to the best of their ability.

Both in the manga and Crystermos, Sailor Moon herself believes she is the cause of everything bad that is happening (Black Moon Arc and Stars). Sailor Galaxia wants her power and her Silver Crystal. Chaos actually confirms to Sailor Moon that they were supposed to meet, it was their fate. Thus, Yaten is essentially telling Moon what the members of the Black Moon family and Chaos tell her in the manga. Moon already blames herself and questions if her powers are good or bad in the Black Moon arc (manga).

Ok, ok, I'm back. :-P

I see what you mean. But to me, in the manga, Moon starts to realize everything is the fault of the power of the Silver Crystal and those who want its power. Other characters tell her so, even. But there's a difference between that and Yaten being pissy because their cohort has something on their mind other than their precious Princessu. It is a very Japanese reaction, though. Blame isn't necessarily assigned to the person who necessarily deserves it - it's just important that blame is placed somewhere.

- Episode 190 - Truth Revealed: The Star Lights' Past -

In this episode, Usagi and Seiya are both dealing with their forced separation. Minako proves she's the MVP by coming up with a way for the two of them to communicate. The Outers continue to intrude and make threats after allowing the outsiders into the planet.

I love this line from Usagi, to the Outers: "Why is everyone making decisions for me? I can't stand it! Just mind your own business!" She immediately backpeddles and apologizes, but it's nice to see her showing some backbone.

I think part of what frustrates me about this subplot is that it's oddly realistic to how culture, particularly in Japan, works. The country is notorious for having a "us-only" attitude, going so far as to exclude those of the same ethnic heritage who weren't born on the islands. There's some similarity there to how the Outers refuse to see the Starlights as anything other than invaders, even if they're capable of getting along with Usagi. It's also unfortunately realistic that if Usagi were an actual Princess IRL, her decisions and choices in life would be at least partially dictated by others. It makes sense, but man, it's frustrating.

Ok, I'll say it, I'm officially sick of Search for Your Love. The song is... ok, in my opinion, but good lord, it gets spammed more in this season than PGSM's C'est La Vie. :|

I have to say again, how are the Starlights able to communicate their thoughts via song like this? Is it part of their magical skillset? I'd love to know more.

It's nice to see Usagi stepping in to fight so that Seiya doesn't have to do so while struggling with recovering from their injury... though... too bad the same can't be said for Japan's sense of commitment to overworking :D Nothing is quite as exciting as forcing a musical performer to work so hard that they faint on stage and stir up everyone into a panic! ^^

The Outers are here to prove their balloon-popping superiority!

All in all, while I'm still annoyed by the prolonged us-vs-them drama, it's nice to at least get some plot development on why the Starlights are the way they are. Not bad. Episode score: 7.5/10

The final Stars manga is newer than the anime plot...

Totally uncalled for though, Seiya made the decision to shield her with their body. Yaten should have yelled at them instead since Sailor Moon did nothing wrong. Honestly sometimes I feel like the writers were trying their best to write Yaten and Taiki as totally unlikeable jerks lol, it doen not make sense for them to accuse Usagi of being the source of their misfortunes since in Stars 90's Galaxia is after all Pure Star Seeds and eventually she would have attacked them to get theirs too.

That is precisely a writer’s job. To create tension and situations that divide the fans‘ opinions. “Oh, this character is a jerk.”

I really like the Seiya x Usagi tension in Stars and how Yaten and Taiki try to prevent Seiya and Usagi from being friends and seeing each other.

Personal opinion.

-Episode 191 - Butterflies of Light - A New Chapter on the Horizon-

I find it really interesting how Usagi parses her relationship with Seiya. I know there's a pretty strong shipping fandom behind them, but it's the fact that Usagi doesn't really see Seiya as a romantic interest that intrigues me. She's certainly done backflips over cute boys in the franchise before, but I guess her relationship with Mamoru has grown enough that she's not that kind of person anymore. I like it.

So Mercury is going to compete in order to get a chance to talk to the forehead themselves. And of course, being the girl genius, she can instantly memorize the best way to fight in a complex fighting game she's never seen before. Just Ami Things.

Mercury's costume for the final event reminds me of a piece of art from the 90s anime, with all the girls in sort of pseudo-Grecian outfits. This one.

Ah, this is the fight where Mercury seems like she's going to get a power-up, just to get interrupted. I really wonder what the plan was here. I can understand changing the story in order to better highlight the Starlights or something, or because there was a lack of budget, but why go so far as to show her powering up when they weren't going to go anywhere with it? Feels like it's going back to when the Inners suggested that Chibi-Chibi may have arrived to give them all new powers. Sorry gang, no.

This moment is supposed to be pretty poignant, I suppose, but the fact that Mars and Venus can't even be arsed to transform is just ridiculous.

With all the power/scent appearances from Kakyuu often centering around Chibi-Chibi, I'm surprised none of the Starlights considered that she might be Kakyuu in disguise. I mean, the hair is close enough.

Episode Score: 6.5/10 - Not a terrible episode, but the seeming changes to the plot and general lack of progression in this one make it less interesting to me.

Also, I didn't hugely factor this into the score, but it needs to be said...

Crystal gets so much flack for its bizarre proportions

Crappy stills

Weird off-model shots

But hot damn, I hope anyone bashing on Crystal also recognizes that the original anime had some very. ugly. moments. I don't know what the hell happened with this episode. Different director or something, I guess. But the visuals really took a downturn here...

dangol' usagi tellyouhwat dangol' princessu

It's really a damn shame that this series has never gotten the respect it deserves in terms of animation quality.

I think Usagi sees Seiya as a very good friend, there is no romantic interest. This applies to the manga, 90’s anime & Cosmos. Seiya does like her, though.

I prefer the Stars 90s anime over the manga at this point, Cosmos denies Usagi an informed choice so that she either can avoid the need for her to jump into the Cauldron or still choose to Jump and activate the Cosmos Seed, at least Usagi here chooses not to fight Galaxia but rather heal her.
As long we remember that Galaxia was supposed to be Sailor Chaos at the end
