I agree on S. It had some great key episodes (particularly the two parter where Usagi's heart crystal was stolen), but it was the season that cemented the "victim gets attacked, senshi save the day, senshi attacks, Moon finishes it off" formula. R and especially Classic were more varied in structure.
As for the OG anime, what about it do you think is overhated?
The structure isn't my problem with it. And you are right it was the season that cemented it, probably because the Rainbow Crystal arc was so well received.
My problem with it was basically, the season wanted to have this ideological debate between Usagi and the Inner's idealism vs Haruka and the Outer's realism (or maybe cynicism). Which is a very interesting and valid source of drama, especially when neither side are clearly 'the bad guys'. The problems for me was:
a) We'd had 2 seasons already. So we know Usagi's idealism isn't just idealism. She canonically has miracle love magic she is capable of reliably harnessing. She has already used this to save the world at least twice and one of those times included resurrecting people. Her future self used it to restore life on the whole planet in fact. Like, I get it that Usagi's claims about finding a way to win without sacrifice was ill defined and preaching everyone just have blind faith, but I think asking for blind faith is not a big request when it is literally coming from Moon Jesus. So the ideological debate wound up being redundant because it just reaffirmed what we the audience already knew. It would've been different if S was self-contained.
b) Uranus and Neptune should have already known this because the mere fact they died in the Silver Millennium and are now alive again is proof of Usagi's power. And Pluto, coming from the future, REALLY should have known this since she knew what NQS could do.
c) Uranus and neptune are comically antagonistic. Why did they abandon the Inners to fight for their lives in the second episode of the season? Why did they insist they couldn't work with them? And why were they so cocky considering they were objectively less experienced than the Inner Senshi?
