Id say that Season 1 was the weakest link. The elimination of the joke panels in the manga didn’t help it, and while I can appreciate a serious story I don’t think that the few characters moments we get in such a fast paced story as this can be afforded to be sacrificed.
The only other con to this season was the storyline changes (that didn’t likely stem from censorship like Beryl being gutted). The SenxShi romance and conflict would have benefited from additional episodes because they felt flat with no development. Beryls backstory could have been more memorable had it received this treatment too.
Sticking closer to the manga for the next 2 seasons -even with its faults- worked in its favor and though I enjoyed season 1 I won’t pretend that the start was shaky.

Season 1. The first arc of the manga is not very good, IMO. The manga becomes good starting with the Black Moon arc --and then it gets better and better.
