The framing of Mamoru over Sailor Moon when he was shielding her from En's attack
[plus, the outlining of his muscles in the scene] I could just be dirty minded as well
Wait, muscles?! Where are the muscle outlines?

Definitely! Not to mention they’re the Chosen Ones, with Sailor Moon being destined to rule the world. All life-changing people were teens once, some even changed the world while they were teens, so I have faith in them. Although I do agree it is pretty morbid and sad now that I think about it.
IRL, tho, many of them have already been killed before they can see any change they've helped make.

OMG! Kazuhisa Takenouchi had a blast directing his last episode in the series! :mischief: The orgasm scene...

I don’t know, I don’t really see it like that? Maybe you’re just reading too much into things.
As much as I love Sailor Moon, the fact it was so popular with the male crowd and mainstream was much due to the fact it was pretty young girls in miniskirt and often having their underpants shown.
Sex sells. That's the sad truth.
It had a lot of nice messages for children about friendship and believing the people you love, but they used sex to sell it and that's undeniable.

It was confirmed those “panty shots” were really just their leotards showing though.

Much more concerning were the actual panty shots they did of barely double digits Chibi-Usa, not to mention the fact the 90’s anime seemed to have a fetish for sexualizing her in general (See her transformation into Black Lady, that scene in SuperS, and the age switch episode)

Notice that this ugly aspect of the show was much more present during Ikuhara's tenure (Black Moon arc-Dead Moon arc). I didn't watch much of Sailor Stars outside the Nehelenia arc, but I don't remember anything barely as creepy as the allegories in SuperS.
I think this guy should never have been in charge of a children's show.

I just worded it weirdly. I meant how Mamoru's only wearing an almost skintight shirt when En attacks them the light and shadows help show some type of outline for where his "muscles" would be [same for the VR episode]
Oh, I get what you meant. His turtleneck was rather form-fitting and skintight.

Chibi-Usa sexualization

The start of the “sexy MOTD”
More Chibi-Usa sexualization

SuperS

Date rape metaphors
outright pedophilia
beastiality
even more Chibi-Usa sexualization

Yep, sounds like Ikuhara alright! :P Classic and Stars, coincidentally the two seasons he wasn’t head director on, were really quite tame in comparison. (At least sexual themes wise, Classic was still the most violent season though, had that one scene of Mercury’s clothes being ripped off that looked like it came straight out of a hentai, and the Nephrite/Naru grooming subplot but at least it was ambiguous whether he returned her feelings or not, and Stars had more innuendos in it’s dialogue, but other than that there was way less blatantly inappropriate sexuality being put on display in either season. In fact, if I recall correctly, once Ikuhara left in Stars there were no more sexy MOTD, where there?)

No, MOTD were just goofy in Stars. And it felt totallly out of place for that season. The phage that almost killed Usagi and Seiya before the outers intervened was a rip off of the clown that attacked the Amazon Trio on SuperS.
But which was that scene of Mercury you mentioned?

It's in the Urawa episode where he has the nightmare/vision about him attacking her.
That's probably his wet dream showing his sexual fantasy/desire on her & the suppressed darker side of his mind, as Freud would say. :cthulhu:

Grrr you're right, it's pretty gross ngl. As if that's the only way they could market a show about female characters.
