I'm surprised I never noticed this before:

Who do you think is the 5th Outer? Moon? ChibiMoon? A scrapped senshi? Or maybe perhaps she's referring to Jupiter?

which volume are these comics from? i've been reading the Japanese re-re-release and as i'm progressing realizing that some of the volumes don't have the 4-koma comics that are in the very early editions. trying to figure out if it's a difference between the 2003 version and the 2013 version or what.

Maybe Ms Naoko was thinking about how there are 4 inner planets, then the Kaiser Belt, then the (then) 5 outer planets. Just a guess.
Kuiper Belt. A Kaiser belt is what you have to start wearing if you eat too many hamburgers. P-:

Besides, the Asteroid Belt separates Mars and Jupiter. The Kuiper Belt includes Pluto.

Considering that there're so many objects (already identified & waiting to be identified) outside the Kuiper belt, there might be many Outers. :P

But what about the rest of the asteroids—Astraea, Hebe, Iris, Flora etc.?

Those could also have Senshi, too - our solar system actually has so many various members that the potential number of Senshi could be large enough to form an AKB-like idol group. lol

Naoko was likely referring to the asteriod known as 2060 Chiron. Chiron was discovered in 1977. Chiron is located between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. Chiron has been classified as an asteroid and as a comet. Chiron became the first of a new class of objests known as the Centaurs. Today. some astronomers considered Chiron to be a dwarf planet. The diameter of Chiron is 233 km.

If there is a fifth Outer Senshi, she is likely Sailor Chiron.

Now someone should design her character in both graphic image & textual description. :D

Maybe a Sailor Planet X? In the 90's, before the Kuiper Belt was discovered (that wouldn't happen until the early 2000's), there were still astronomers who thought there might be another planet beyond Pluto. This planet was nicknamed "Planet X," a title formerly given to Pluto until Pluto's discovery in the 1920s.

Pluto was thought to be causing irregularities in Neptune's orbit, until it was found to be far too small, leading astronomers to believe that another gas giant planet could be even further out. However, more recently it was calculated that Neptune and Uranus affect each other's orbit, so the need for Planet X was nixed.

Until recently.

The Kuiper Belt was found to end abruptly, leading some to think that there could still be another planet out there clearing the edge of debris. There may also be multiple planets within the Kuiper Belt as large as Mars or Earth that are, for now, too far away to detect. The Oort Cloud, a sphere of comets even more distant than the Kuiper Belt, may also have planets ejected from the Solar System during its early formation.

So taking that into account, there could be dozens of Outer Senshi. :P

I bought a telescope but it was always too cloudy :(
And I wonder if it could be Pluto's twin Planet Eris? Or perhaps Chronos? They've mentioned the time god a couple of times. I did think that it might be something to do with Jupiter actually being FROM the outer solar system but she was created separately from the outers :/

I wish, but Eris was only discovered in the early or mid 2000s. Long after Naoko wrote Sailor Moon. Still, a Sailor Eris (or even a group of senshi from the Kuiper Belt) would be awesome in the new anime or a new manga. :)

That is a really interesting idea. Maybe it just has something to do with her orbit in the Solar System making her an inner senshi/but being outside the the belt would give her stronger powers perhaps?

Come to think of it, her planet is the largest known in the solar system. I wonder if her kingdom only resided on a small portion of the planet. I know that Jupiter is always stormy with that ongoing storm spot.

If they ever did any side stories or made any OAV specials or something; I'd like to see what life was like on each of the senshi's planet and their kingdoms. I would like to see each senshi on an adventure to save their planet during the Sailor Wars and their parents and citizens of their home planets being either killed or turned into youma and then they regroup at the moon kingdom learning about the Silver Crystal or something like that. I'm very curious about this. Needless to say, I'll probably cap the idea and twist it for one of my own story creations to some effect..

Maybe Charon? :)
