Why didn't they bring back the 90s cast for Crystal?

Why did they only bring back Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi? Didn't the original cast get offered their roles or a chance to audition? I know the inners seiyuus are friends with Naoko and they could've been brought back if she really wanted it and they'd have been happy to return. And I know most of them are still active in the seiyuu industry. And they also recast Mamoru when they had his seiyuu at the first 20th anniversary event. I wish they would've at least kept Usagi and Mamoru's seiyuus for Crystal. And no I don't hate the new cast, I just miss the old cast. And I'm curious about what happened.

I would've liked that too, though honestly I can't really tell much of a difference between their voices other than Rei's. Though judging from Kotono Mitsuishi's performance, maybe the roles strained the other seiyuu's voices too much, especially with all the yelling.

I think maybe is because there voices wouldn't fit the characters . The manga, and the 90 s anime characters are kinda different. And some of them might had different projects.

I like the new voices.
I liked the old ones too, but for Crystal I rather have new ones.
I see them as two different tales, and for me, the voices are better to be different too. :innocent:

That's what Megumi Ogata wrote in her Twitter too, when fans wanted her to return "This Sailor Uranus is different from one i played"

I understand the "manga characters are different" argument, but it's not like that stopped them from bringing back Kotono. If anything, I would've found it interesting to see how the same actors would tackle the differences in their characters.

Oh well. At least the Viz dub used the same voice cast for Crystal and the 90s redub. :)

I'm fine with a new cast. Bringing back the entire cast from the '90s anime would feel gimmicky to me. Besides, this is supposed to be a different show. I want it to be its own thing without falling back too much on stuff from the old anime.

It was probably due to budget reasons. Newbies are less expensive than seasoned actors.
Most of the Crystal cast, including villains, are actually pretty high-profile, big budget voice actors in Japan. I wouldn't be surprised to hear casting Rina Satou and Mamoru Miyano cost more than brining back the old inners.

I guess they just didn't bother inviting former voice actors. And yeah even minor characters are voiced by quite prolific voice actors, still a few more surprises would be good.

I think it's less to do with budget, and more about getting a newer generation of actresses that are more popular with modern audiences. The sad thing though is that because of them copying the manga, a lot of characters barely have any substantial lines in the series. So you have something unfortunate like the talented Rina Satou basically voicing a glorified extra (I never realized how little Rei spoke in the manga until watching Crystal).

It's a silly argument because these people are actresses. They're able to play different people all the time. It would have been really neat to hear someone like Michie Tomizawa play a more manga accurate Rei. But oh well.

I think bringing only Kotono back was a mistake because it makes her sound so out of place with the rest of the cast. It should have been either hire a completely brand new cast including Usagi, or hire most of the original cast as possible.

Exactly! Though in the case of Michie, she is retired, so they may not have been able to get her back.

It would have been interesting to see who they'd pick for Usagi's successor. During the two year wait for Crystal's premiere, I remember a foreign magazine reported that one of the reasons for the delay was due to a disagreement regarding the voice cast. Naoko supposedly wanting the original cast to return, while Toei wanted an entirely brand new cast. This was never confirmed to be anything more than rumors, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. It would explain why Crystal went for a middle ground approach with Kotono returning.

Semi-retired, she actually voiced Laki in One Piece during the Skypiea arc in 2003 and later voiced Rachel in the 2004 Ninja Gaiden game, a character she continues to voice to this day as Rachel was recently introduced in the Dead or Alive series starting with 5 Ultimate in 2013.

She also voiced Roberta in Black Lagoon in 2006 & 2010, Mantis Imagin in one of the Kamen Rider Cho-Den-O movies also in 2010 and was recently revealed to be replacing the late Yuko Mizutani as Mihoshi in the new Tenchi Muyo OVA 4 series.

Source please? Never heard this before and reminds me of the Saint Seiya Hades fiasco where the opposite happened.

They probably wanted to start fresh, and wanted Crystal to be it's own thing. I still think that only having Kotono come back was a bad choice, and it seemed a bit disrespectful to the rest of the cast. They could easily brought back the original cast, and recasted where necessary (like for actors that have retired, or passed on).

I think that was part of the reason as well. Sailor Moon Crystal is not a remake, so make sense they use other voice actors . I think Kotono was braught back because she was the most popular .(In sailor moon wise)
