Hmm maybe keep this one for discussions about all translated versions and various dubs, and the other one for the movie itself, what people thought about it, scenario screenplay music etc ?
This makes sense, but the thread title would have to be changed to reflect that more precisely - if no one objects, I'll go w/ this option & change the thread title a bit later. :)
Thread title now modified.

anyone know the source on this? new moon pride is usually pretty accurate so i believe them, but this sucks if true, especially to gain honorifics midway thru the new series. when i saw "mamo-chan" i assumed it was just this nickname gaining an honorific which imo isnt so bad
Yeah, I'm gonna need some actual sources too. Switching to "Mamo-chan" after all this time is an obnoxious inconsistency, but it doesn't mean they're gonna go full Persona and do it with everyone.

Like, sure. It sounds plausible but we have zero confirmation on this yet (afaik).

I'm hoping that's not true. If it is, it sets a dangerous precedent for future dubs. I barely tolerate honorifics in the manga.

Like with the lyrics to Moonlight Densetsu, it's putting the feelings of the author ahead of the understanding of the audience...on a product the author is unlikely to ever view.
Why I think authors should have say.Using honorifics here is ingorant.

Keeping the honorifics is just a blindingly stupid move. Most of us were celebrating the news of Netflix picking up Eternal because it has a bigger reach than a platform like Crunchyroll and would get viewers who don't necessarily watch anime, but may have watched the '90s anime a long time ago in their native language... Maybe I'm being dramatic, but I think you risk turning those kind of casual viewers off with a move like this.

I don't think it will deter casual viewers from tuning in, but I do think it will keep them from taking it seriously.
Let’s be real- half the casual US fans tuning in are gonna be confused about what happened to “Serena” and “Darien”. It won’t matter if it’s Mamo or Mamo-Chan- they’ll be shocked as is.

This is a case of it really making no sense for Netflix to not also pick up Crystal or to have at least commissioned Toei to do an Eternal short to explain the events leading up to the movie. This definitely isn’t like the 90s films that you could just dive into- it picks up right after season 3.

I agree, it is so bizzare having it on its own, while it is a part of a series and you are supposed to know all the characters, backstory and stuff, some of which were never properly introduced even in the 90s show. That aside it is still weird to have all the voice actors returning to be consistent, and yet decide to suddenly add honorifics to the picture. I really it will be just Mamo-chan and Mako-chan, and not the whole set of them.

If this whole thing is true, then is it bad that part of me wants to blame the latino dub crew for trying to put in the dic names? Like, they couldn't resist trying to sneak that stuff in and now everyone is stuck with an incredibly stupid mandate?

Hey, I blame FUNimation for Khara's meddling with Evangelion since the 3.33 fiasco and also for screwing other countries out of getting Yuri on Ice so you're fine to blame them if true.

I honestly don’t think its their fault. Toei produced the French dub for Crystal and they initially had Usagi’s name as Serena in all the commercials for it before the show aired.
That must have been an issue since they switched it to Usagi once it actually premiered but they had no problem leaving Mamo as Endy, so clearly that was approved by Naoko. It’s a similar situation to the Latin American mistake but that didn’t cause her to go crazy on the honorifics etc. So I don’t think this would have either.

why would the US fans be confused? “Serena” and “Darien” haven’t been used since the cloverway/dic adaptation from the mid 90s to early 2000s. Usagi and Mamoru have been used since the series was redubbed by VIZ, as well as in Crystal.

Because most casual Netflix viewers never watched the series since the 90's and never probably hear about a VIZ redub or even Crystal lol...
