I'm cautious about the whole thing, either way. Can't wait to be disappointed again.
Yeah. You have to watch this with lowered expectations even with some improvements. There's some :wtf: moments here and there but it does get better.

I dont hate Crystal but I did dislike how they handled it. I think they caused a lot of confusion with the series. One minute the series was supposed to be faithful to the manga and then they started doing wtf ever moments later. It is too inconsistent without enough redeeming qualities.

The 90's was pretty inconsistent too but it had a lot of charm that Crystal lacks.

In fact in Crystal, I remember watching Act 3 with a little glare after Jadeite escaped from being burned to death. Man that would have been awesome.

Season II tried to add a bit more and it seemed a tad bit darker compared to Season 1.

Actually, if I'm being honest, I think Crystal Black Moon Arc is better than Crystal Dark Kingdom.

I also slightly hate they fell under the pressure to redo the style in Season III.

While it looked okay animation-wise for the most part, some things were just really bland and bad looking and it showed.

Crystal did okay with the movie at times but there were times when it looked very "Wait, a movie is being animated like this?" to me.

Crystal is the reason I started to learn how animation is done. LOL.

Agreed! The way Crystal was handled was confusing. Yes, it's purpose was to adapt the source material more accurately. It's inconsistencies bug me too.

As someone said the worst thing is its existence.

100% agree. If you look at the 90's closely, you'll realise it hardly has animation. However, it has credit because the directors made a lot of camera movements. That's why Crystal S3 and Eternal seem better than the first two seasons.
I wouldn’t go THAT far, do manga fans not deserve their own manga accurate anime adaptation after years of begging Toei? Especially since this is a trend that all anime reboots are doing so why should the Sailor Moon manga be any different?

Then again the very nature of this franchise doesn’t really lend itself to a direct copy/adaptation of any of it’s versions seeing as Sailor Moon has always functioned as sort of a Marvel multiverse and one version isn’t anymore canon over the other.

Every different Sailor Moon version produced has always just gone and done it’s own thing, Crystal is really the first of it’s kind to be a replica of an already existing version and even it had changes in it’s earlier seasons.

They already have 5 or 6 editions of the manga in different formats, why would they want to watch an inferior adaptation? Haven't they had enough? :mischief:

Huh? No they don’t. They only ever had the manga in manga/comic format and that’s it, Crystal was the first time the manga was translated into another medium. (Terribly I might add but does that mean the entire concept of porting over the manga into another format is worthless?)

Where do I begin to tell the stooorrryyyyyyyy

Boom - instead of developing the shittenou as individuals they became one note like the manga
and the only really good thing is them being kept as Chiba's Guardians but that doesn't get re visited all that much

Boom Boom - that season one animation style and 3d transformations, it doesn't look good but it is perfect for memes LOL :booze:

Boom Boom Boom - the music is boring it's all this orchestral blandness that doesn't give me the high energy vibe the 90s BGM had 90s had it bumpin

Bam - Senshi x Shittenou why? why does anyone think these characters fit with the inners past or present it's like Usagi x Chiba copy cats
"princess you better stay away from those earth boys" meanwhile they do it too and the whole thing felt artificial and just added in for padding
also it ends abruptly having them be killed off, what I'm supposed to feel bad for them? if anything all that tells me is they dipped their toe in it and said "ooh that's too cold" and abandoned the idea
I don't know what annoys me more this or 90s break up arc both are equally useless.

Bam Bam - episode 4

Bam Bam Boom - not enough comedy

Kablaam - taking away Beryl's death by Venus and reducing everything to her necklace cause you know, top tier writing

Crystal isn't ALL bad my main issues stem from season 1 specifically I actually think Black Moon was slightly better and 3 a major improvement as was Eternal

- The constant delays (We went from 2012 to 2013 to 2014, to 2016, to 2021, to 2023. I doubt SM Cosmos will release in '23)
- The ugly ONA versions of Seasons I and II
- The Blu-Ray versions of Season I and II still have two major errors (Including a downgrade from the ONA. How.)
- Season III received no retouching when a few scenes really needed it
- Season I taking away Venus' kill of Beryl (It was almost a great show of camaraderie to have them all work together to slay her, but Jupiter did nothing but shout.)
- "Her life force is in her necklace!" out of nowhere in Season I. (There was a way they could have still stabbed Beryl and kept it light on violence. C'mon.)

That's pretty much it for me.

4 errors for me:
-> Too visually ugly.
-> The story too rushed. A few more episodes would have been welcome.
-> They should have taken Tadano from the start, competent people.
-> And bring back all the old voice cast. Because, let's be honest, the new just imitates the old.

I agree about the lazy animation (twirling the stick in Act 13). But why keep mentioning that in-between frames of Sailor Mars?
Because a lot of them were not inbetween. Even after the correected scenes on blu ray, act 3 still has plenty of key frames with Rei looking like alien/ frog. Crystal s1-2has plenty of off-model close ups that vary from slightly jarring to really ugly. Season 3 fixed that though - they were ugly by design, on the level of the staff working on it. Sakou needed a much bigger budget and proper schedule to realize her vision properly. The biggest mistake is they actually thouggt they can pull of designs as intricate. If tgey started with Tadano's simple designs it could have been consistent and most likely over by now. Toei cannot pull of complexe designs anymore, because they treat their staff like trash and constantly outsorce. I wish Naoko was able to work with a different studio that could do the job properly, even if the animation is not bombastic.

Honestly, I'm sad they weren't bolder with their expansion. I enjoyed the Shitennou having expanded plot and even the romance with the Soldiers, but it didn't go anywhere. At the very least, the girls should have been emotionally impacted by the Shitennou deaths. Also, I'm said the extra chapters weren't animated. Casablanca Memories, the Chibi Usa stories, the Exam Battles...all would have been fun to see in anime form

I would say that only applies to the Outers in the Eternal movie. They're trying real hard to sound like the 90s VAs. And they succeed LMAO
Most of them have surely gotten inspiration from the old cast, but it sounds like "they're doing their own thing" enough to me. Ami doesn't sound like a wallflower all the time and Minako sounds more like a teenager than she did in the 90s. And, attack/transformation calls aside, Rina's Rei doesn't sound nothing like Michie's Rei.

This is completely true and they are more or less doing their own thing. And Rina can actually do a pretty darn good impression as Michie. Back in the day when they announced the voice actors I watched videos with samples of their voices and one of her characters sounded exactly like Michie, sadly I cannot remember the anime now, after all this time. So she sounding so different is a choice.

If they made the 5 arcs in episode format they might adapt those including the Chibiusa stories in the canon.

And anything positive?

It's been almost a decade since S1/S2 premiere. The series has settled and maybe it's time to reappraise it and find something positive. For instance, I find episode 16 better than the manga one, in terms of Ami's character. And the action scenes were not bad at all.
