She seems close enough to the color illustrations
i did think setsuna looked a bit too pale in naoko's color artwork, because in the black and white manga pages naoko applies a pretty dense screentone to her and none to the other senshi except as shading:

i wish color pictures of her were more like she looks in black and white. she's sooooo pretty :wow:

I don't understand why you guys base on BW version to determine the skin color of characters, instead of color version, where all of color are fully fleshed out. The BW pages can't really tell anything. It seems she used the same screentone for all lower dresses. If it was done precisely, Pluto's lower dress should have been pure black.

It's a western thing, especially, an american thing to see people of colour in anime/manga and everywhere.
Pluto has dark skin and the black Sailor fuku because Naoko wanted to materialise the dark nature of the character.

gee i must have expressed myself poorly

i just like the contrast of pluto's skin in b&w with the white of her fuku. it's much less striking in color because the shade value changes in the transfer from screentone to color. in my opinion she really pops off the page in b&w and doesn't as much in color. that's it.

i don't think naoko meant she was anything other than japanese

Maybe because the printing technology at the time demanded a stronger contrast so every screentone could appear properly on a BW page.
In a Manben documentary, the program presenter made a comment that the low printing technology at the time couldn't preserve all the detail of manga Poe no Ichizoku by Hagio Moto well.

POC in the american point of view also includes asians, right? Anyway - Pluto is dark skinned in many panels of the manga ,and in Stars anime, but probably not of african descent.

There are also (dark skinned) japanese people (of color?).

And Usagi and Venus could pass as german or swedish girls…

You gave one instance when they did look good - some key visuals looked decent. But once the frogs happened,... Seriously Akira was the most off model animation director in Crystal and they decided to give him the job of all people.... They looked nice once - in the Tellu episode, when nobody followed them.
