Attacks in Sailor Moon fall into several categories of canonicity:

  • Universal Canon: These are the attacks that appear in every version of Sailor Moon, from the manga to the musicals, the video games to Crystal. I'm talking about your Moon Healing Escalations, your Burning Mandalas, and your Shine Aqua Illusions. These are the attacks that are here to stay.
  • Multi Canon: These are the attacks that appear in almost every version of Sailor Moon. I'm talking about your Moon Twilight Flashes, your Fire Souls, and your Shabon Sprays. They're not a sure bet, but they're enough of a staple at this point that we can be reasonably sure they're not in any danger of disappearing for good.
  • Quasi Canon: These are the attacks that just appear in a couple of iterations, or, if they appear in more, their number of uses are limited or the iterations in which they appeared aren't the most well-known. I'm talking about your Fire Soul Birds, Supreme Thunder Dragons, Shine Snow Illusions, and Rolling Heart Vibrations. While some of these attacks may be on the rise in popularity, others are in danger of slipping into permanent obscurity.
  • Singular Canon: These are the attacks that appear in only one canon. I'm talking your anime-only attacks (Moon Tiara Stardust), your manga-only attacks (at this point, I think this might just be all of Sailor V's attacks apart from Crescent Beam and Crescent Boomerang), your PGSM-only attacks (Youma Taisan, Mercury Aqua Blizzard, Moonlight Attractive Attack, etc), your musicals-only attacks (Moon Princess Crash, Tuxedo Duel Cross Bomber, etc), and your video games-only attacks (see list here). These are attacks that seem to have had very short, one-and-done shelf lives. Whether or not we'll ever see them again seems unlikely at this point.
  • Dub Canon: And, of course, there are the attack phrases that only exist in a particular language's dub or manga translation. Given the franchise's generally insular style of management, it's doubtful these will get new life apart from a redub or Crystal dub that really lucks out with some creative freedom.

So, what I'd like to know is, of the Quasi, Singular, and Dub Canon attacks, which would you like to see the franchise revive and make staples in future video games, anime, and live action (musical and otherwise) adaptations?

Personally, I'd really love to see Tuxedo Mask's other attacks from the musicals (Tuxedo Mirage, Tuxedo Versus, Tuxedo Duel Cross Bomber, Earth Star Power) become permanent fixtures. He has a Sailor Crystal for crying out loud; he shouldn't be so generally useless, and giving him one attack for 3 arcs is lame.

I'd also like to see Princess Sailor Moon's attack from PGSM make a triumphant return. I always thought it was such a bad@$$ attack, and I'd love to see a (competently) animated version one day. All it needs is a call phrase. Moon Pentagram Detonation!

Even though I haven't really played any of the video games, I do think a lot of the attack phrases sound awesome. "Death Drive Break." "Dimension Dance." "Moon Sparkling Sensation." "Venus Charm Illusion." "Sea Serpent Strangle"!? Sign me up!

I'd love all of the Sailor Moon R "filler" attacks to not only be canon, but also close to ultimate attacks since their effects were more impressive than later standard attacks.

I would also like to see "Double Shabon Spray Freezing!" the dub-only "Mars Firestorm Flash!" since that was supposed to be Sailor Mars' actual upgraded attack, and "Cosmic Moon Power" as the offensive version of "Moon Healing Escalation."

I’d argue Shine Aqua Illusion is a more impressive follow up than Shabon Spray Freezing.

The other girls less so, especially Jupiter and Venus who really got the short end of the stick for their Star Power attacks compared to their Makai Tree arc attacks. (Burning Mandala wasn’t as bad but I did like the burning phoenix of Fire Soul Bird better and how it integrated her ofuda). I almost wish the anime had forgone giving the girls new attacks in the Makai tree arc (that they were going to later almost never use again anyways) and save the new techniques so that Fire Soul Bird, Crescent Beam Shower, and Supreme Thunder Dragon would be their proper new attacks when they got their star power (with Mercury still getting Shine Aqua Illusion)

, and "Cosmic Moon Power" as the offensive version of "Moon Healing Escalation."
I never did understand the Japanese version’s logic in Moon Healing Escalation also being used as an offensive technique. Was she trying to turn Kunzite into a normal human and he was too corrupted to be refreshed so it just deflected his energy blades back at him? I don’t even know what the intent with Super Beryl was honestly.

I’m glad the Dic dub just made it a clear offensive attack with a different function than when its used to turn monsters back into humans*

*Although weirdly, she made it seemed like it was her intent to use Moon Healing Activation on Minotaur even though she should have known the new monsters of the week were no longer humans but tarot cards

I kinda get it, but it's awful.

That scene with Kunzite horribly done in the original anime, made even worse by the fact that the Shitennou's past, which was an important plot point of the manga, was reduced to a hint or two. So it was confusing, especially since one of the critical points of Serenity's exposition was supposed to reveal that the four generals were humans who were corrupted. This came off weird because we never saw any of these people pre-corrupted. That would be fine, though, if it weren't supposed to tie in what happens later in the episode.

It is, though. The viewer is intended to think that with the past revealed now, that Kunzite can be healed, and that's what Sailor Moon does, since she just remembered that what her mom did. Hence why Kunzite says, "I will not yell 'Refresh!"

I don't blame you for not understanding or just not liking it, because for years I was baffled too, even though some fans said, "It's obvious she was trying to heal him."

Not from that body language. She looked more like she was going to end him. Coldly. And her reflecting the blades back to him to defend herself didn't help with her being "merciful."

No wonder the dub essentially tossed it out the window because in the original version made absolutely no sense from what we were shown. You have to perform mental gymnastics and draw from outside material to make sense of that scene.

They pretty much removed the connection to Endymion entirely and we just know they were Beryl’s generals from earth when she lead the coup against the Moon Kingdom.

There’s some lip service to the concept that like the Senshi and Mamoru, Beryl and the Shitenou were reincarnated as normal humans and then “re-awakened their past memories” but like you said the anime never really touched on it aside from lightly talking about it in episode 44. At best, it’s feasible that Masato Sanjoin was Nephrite’s reborn name which would explained how he became an established young business man in the current year but we’re getting to head canon territory at this point.

I guess I never felt it was obvious. I was just confused when I first saw the episode subbed years and years ago.

Agreed nothing about the presentation of that scene made it feel like Moon’s intent was too restore Kunzite’s humanity and she only intended to destroy him.

"You think you can hurt my friends? I'll show you! I'm gonna heal the crap out of you!!!" --- Usagi, apparently
I like that the attacks of PSM in PGSM, while being extraordinarily powerful, don't even have any names at all - it's like "I'm so cool that I don't care to yell out those ridiculous attack names like those idiot Senshi."

The Sailor Moon Arcade game featured some exclusive animated attacks not used in the 90's anime. Moon, Mercury, and Venus have some pretty cool different attacks for example. Let's see these attacks return!

Rolling Heart Vibration looks so much better here. SM Crystal is a joke.
