I wasn't into stargazing or lookind at constellations (all the stars always look the same to me, but given that I liked Star Trek, wanted to be an astronaut as a little kid, and liked the idea of going to other planets, then Sailor Moon piqued my interest because of the "space" factor. It didn't hurt that I was also a big fan of Mega Man V for Game Boy for the same reason. (It amazes me how wildly different both Sailor Moon and Mega Man played with planetary concepts despite both being media originating in Japan.)

SM also dives into the gods and goddesses associated with the names of the planets too. Jupiter being the biggest planet, Mako being prideful of her "talents" (which is also a kind of Roman unit of mass and currency just for good measure), and also how many Roman myths can be summarized as: Jupiter opened his eyes and saw someone sexy, reminding me of all the attempted romances of Makoto.
