Faithful to the manga - what does that mean (to you)?

Fate Stay/Night is neither under-performing, nor lack popularity. Movies make more money and sell better, so many try this route.

As I recall, some Kamen Rider series, which're hardly unpopular, also had sequel movies a number of years ago.

for me is following the manga from panel to panel, well the first season if they didn't change it and add thinks for me would have been perfect, not having fillers, and things like that, maybe only change the consecutive of what happen to make it more understandable

I noticed that as well. Underperforming or moderately popular shows tend to get sequel movies/OVAs instead of sequel series nowadays.

It's totally the opposite, actually.

Great examples: Made in Abyss, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fate Stay/Night, Evangelion, even Dragon Ball Super, and of course Sailor Moon.

All of this are extremely popular and are getting movie sequels for their next arcs.

Doing a movie sequel is extremely more expensive and risky than doing a tv series. It's giving your franchise the "premium treatment".

As far as adapting the manga 1:1 that doesn’t seem to be a problem. The animation is cheap and the character designs are hideous (I’m not a fan of Takeuchi’s artwork Toei did it better in the 90) also its the changes they make from the manga, specifically the first arc that were its biggest crimes. The best stuff in the first arc? The Senshi killing the Shitenou, Venus slaying Beryl with the Moon sword? All gone.

I love how they adapted manga panels 1:1, but am not a fan of 1 chapter - 1 episode approach (some chapters are mostly dialogue and others are mostly battle), so I’m glad Dream arc is going to be adapted into movies
