Have they ever been so in the 1st place?
That was the impression I got. Their first performance they had of 'Fire Truck' had that DIC dub music cues. Also the music video along with that ASMR interview. They actually said themselves they represent the sailors they were assigned to.

Now they're going the 'Aespa' route but instead of a virtual Metaverse they're going for a retro 90s gamer theme based on those Minecraft avatars they have on Instagram.

Whoops, somehow I totally missed this post!
There were two threads about the group, which were merged just hours ago.

It's pretty obvious that they were paying respects to Sailor Moon - what I doubted is whether it was specifically for promoting the Cosmos films like what Momoiro Clover Z did.

this is kinda catchy but not sure how it relates to sailor moon at all tho
They were heavily cross promoting 'Sailor' stuff in this ASMR video. And each of the girls mentions who they represent.

Now I'm am not so sure. May be they do need a rebrand and realizing they need to compete with Kpop girl groups such as ITZY, Aespa and Blackpink.

At the start of the music video of 'Lettuce' an announcer mentions 'SG5 FM' though. I am hoping they won't abandon this idea of all 5 members representing :usagi::minako::rei::mako::ami:. After all the SG stands for 'Sailor Guardians'.

I guess I can understand that being a Sailor Moon tie-in group can limit your reach/appeal but like, the whole thing is confusing. They never really committed to the Sailor Moon branding, either. What’s the point in making a deal with Takeuchi and not capitalising on it in your imagery? The ‘collaboration’ was so vague that they probably could’ve gotten away with it as an homage and not had to go through the trouble of paying/auditioning to Naoko. And then Naoko went the extra mile and gave BLACKPINK’s Jennie some actual artwork? :P Make it make sense.

Relying on soft power marketing. So far it is still working since :usagi: is still in the top 10 or 15 highest grossing anime. According to CBR :usagi: is top 11 (not at all suprise if this is more accurate :orangeghost:) but both MSN and India Times says it's top 9 if you google it.

All those tampons, free condoms to fight STD, Japan exclusive mobile game tie ins and crack pots. Mediocre marketing somehow works for this franchise and these TOEI executives are not at all interested much since they know they won't be getting a Porsche.
