Should the Senshi have kept individualities during power ups?

#21
I think they should have had special traits but can understand the uniformity of them in relation to Super Sentai. The Eternal fuku is enough for me with them having different colors and the longer back bows and multilayered skirts are interesting aspect at first glance.

I always felt their fuku was lacking in the anime because Mars didn't have her pendant and Jupiter had no belt.

I'm fine with either way tho, as long as I get to see them in their outfits lol.
Naoko was definitely influenced by Super Sentai when she made the "Eternal" uniforms for everyone else.

I wouldn't mind if they had their eternal uniforms while performing a group attack (in such an instance, I think the uniformity would be aesthetically pleasing), but otherwise....meh.
Seeing the team attack in their "eternal" uniforms would be cool!

Their Eternal Form goes against Super Sentai's individuality between each Senshi in their respective teams.
I see now. I can respect your opinion. I like the two groups having their unique shoes and earrings.

Some people call the Eternal forms of other Senshi "Sailor Star" due to them having a Star motif in their outfits since they weren't called as Eternal in the Manga in any way.

I call the rest of the Guardians' third forms "Eternal Star" mainly due to how similar they are to Eternal Sailor Moon, yet the team including Chibi Moon all have a star motif from head to toe. This confuses me because Chibi-Usa is technically Moon royalty. It may eventually change in Crystal Tokyo when she takes on the Sailor Moon mantle from Usagi.

I really like the individual details each one has in their costumes... even if subtle, I like them... like different shoes, or some not wearing sleeve pads over the shoulders... Jupiter's belt... Saturn's so unique costume...

So, even if I don't "hate" them losing those details, I dislike it, and I feel like they are becoming more and more "clones" of each other, specially when they reach the "eternal" outfits, where there is no differences at all (same boots, earrings, etc), except colors.

Just give them some new, unique armors &/or functional gadget-accessories during power-ups, instead of fashion-only changes & "standardization" of their outfits. :ninja:
I think that Dream meant to give them unique items (Harp, Wreath, Whip, Arrow) but since the last arc finishes them off it doesn't illustrate it very well?

I honestly don't mind them not having armor and being more fashion/aesthetic based...

except maybe Sailor Kakyuu P-:

It's been said that the similarities between their final uniforms are to help indicate that they're part of a singular team, but I wonder how much of the decision was based upon making it easier for the animators? They were already responsible for simplifying the majority of Moon's and the Inners' unique aesthetics (Moon's hair brooches not appearing until S, Mercury's sleeves, no Mars gem/Jupiter belt/Venus belt/etc). Animating something as unique as Saturn's costume for one whopping episode in the 90s was probably not a big deal, but keeping track of all of the variations must have been a bit of a headache for them.

You have a point, & if I were the animator, I'd make their final uniforms have the same colors too, preferably all white, for the same reason. :P

I think a lot of the differences in the 90's outfits were due to Naoko changing everything repeatedly, honestly. Everything probably got a lot more faithful to the manga after season 1 because she had a better idea of what the uniforms were going to look like.

I'm sure *some* of the differences were for streamlining production a bit, but a lot of the differences were present in the manga at some point.

Moon's prototype outfit

There's also the gold heart on her choker for the third arc and the simplified stripes on her skirt as Super Sailor Moon. Chibi Moon's outfit is identical outside of the brooch an red jewel in the tiara (plus she gets the berets in her hair once Usagi become Super Sailor Moon)

Mercury had weird blue transparent sleeves that connected down to her gloves in this semi-final design sheet. I guess either Naoko, the publishers, Toei, or some combination said it would be too difficult to animate (or that it was ugly), and they changed it last minute.

Considering Pluto was sleeveless in the 90's anime, I don't see why they wouldn't do the same with Mercury unless Naoko hadn't considered it at the time they finished her anime design. Also, note how the stripes on Mercury's boots are light blue like in the anime. Naoko later decided to make them white like Moon's but it was also probably last minute.

Mars was going to have one stripe on her sailor collar before Naoko changed it to three, but it made it in to the anime. The pendant on the belt was probably removed to simplify the outfit, but Naoko herself constantly forgot to draw it in the manga and had to add it back in for the shinzoban release (same thing happened to Jupiter's potpourri belt and Venus' chain). There's also those weird little anklets that never showed up in any version, too.

Jupiter also had two stripes on her outfit before it was upped to three in the manga. The anime actually changed it a bit by making the stripes thicker than Moon/Mercury's so it would match Makoto's school uniform.

Sailor V's outfit is straight up identical to the 90's anime version here. Here's some examples of Naoko forgetting to draw some of these little details the anime left out: With Chibi Moon and the Outers, it looks like Naoko didn't change them around as much as Moon and the Inners, so that might be why there aren't so many differences. And the only time I can remember Pluto accidentally being given sleeves was in a few shots near the end of the S movie.
Animating something as unique as Saturn's costume for one whopping episode in the 90s was probably not a big deal, but keeping track of all of the variations must have been a bit of a headache for them.
It looks like the issue had to do with small intricate details like the belts and stuff. This was back when they used hand-painted cels, and Toei shows have always been kinda rushed, so I can see them being fine with big differences like Saturn's outfit but not stuff like small little beads hanging across a skirt.

One of the most "enjoyable" aspects of some of the Inners/Outers are the little things in their outfits that distinguish them from one another. As they go through their power ups they all become more unified in their looks and lose a part of what made them individuals. Do you think they should've kept their special outfit traits as they powered up or are you a fan of them looking like one unit?
Yup! The basic fuku gives them a cohesive look anyway. Let them have some fun and accessorize.

Yes, I absolutely would've liked it better if their uniforms had kept their individuality through their power-ups. This is the biggest reason why I don't really like the Super and Eternal fukus, except for Moon and Chibimoon. Everyone just looks exactly the same except for colors, it's so uncreative and lacking in personality. Heck, the Eternal uniform doesn't even allow them unique shoes!

Something that could've worked for a Super uniform was to give all the senshi longer back bows and and a skirt stripe(s). Then they could've kept the unique stuff like the number of collar stripes, choker gems, sleeves, and brooches.

Yes! That's the reason. I believe the Sailors' final uniforms are a result of their unity in the present life.

I heard you, I initially disliked all the "Eternal" uniforms (sans Moon) because of how identical they were. Furthermore, I thought Pink Moon having a star motif despite being a Moon Soldier was underwhelming. Now, I somewhat appreciate the two tiered skirts on Mercury, Venus, Pink Moon, and Jupiter.

Ooh! I absolutely like your idea for the Sailor team's "Super" uniforms. When you brought up skirt stripes, what were you referring to? Can you be more specific?

I think for all Senshi except Moon, the upgrade should stop at super form. The super forms in my opinion look the prettiest without being too over the top and uniform. Love the heart broaches, long back bows, and especially the transparent sleeves. In Sera Myu Amour Eternal and Le Mouvement Final, the super fukus look so beautiful!!

Regular fukus are wayy too plain to me.
Eternal fukus for senshi other than Moon are extremely unnecessary since they pretty much all don't get stronger in the Stars manga and all die off so what's the point, and aesthetically they lose individuality.

The Eternal forms feel like a novelty. They were definitely pretty and I want some collectibles of them in those forms, but...
I prefer the original forms and loved how different each one felt. Still uniform but with each character adding their own flair.
Even though I love the Super forms, the heart broaches and long ribbons (while gorgeous) feel a bit much.) These are maybe my favorite as far as how pretty they are. But losing the little touches (Mercury and Pluto not having sleeves) is sad. I do find the sleeves the prettiest in this form.
The Eternal forms just turn the awkward factor up to 11.

I like all three forms though and wish we could see where she'd take the forms from there.
Canonically if it is the same timeline, the inners go back to their first forms or something extremely similar in Crystal Tokyo.
I think the Eternal skirts with the original accessories/shoes would be nice to see.

Fanartists should try combining the designs of all three & see how it'd look, if they haven't done that already. :)
